I don't see how it sucks, I've yet to even really hear how's that's been terribly detrimental to your life in any way and in fact you've mentioned many ways in which it has been an asset
Odessa
03-30-2009, 06:07 AM
i have? that's odd, as I can't name a single advantage of it off hand. you sure this was me you were talking too?
and it does have it's disadvantages come say, a background check for a new apartment or a job. I have to disclose such things or it's considered lying to gain employment, and that counts as fraud, thus grounds for being fired/evicted. so that sucks.

yes, you've mentioend sarah's point of view enough times, but I don't particuarly care about her since i've met her all of what, twice? I say the books are great but you don't seem as complacent to agree with whatever i say, so why should what she says matter?

well now, I can answer that in which you'll non-discicriminatly counter my opinions and even small misunderstandings, or if I don't answer you'll hold that against me so I guess I'll just say this: the characters sucked, Edward wasn't so much a hero with a dark side as a complete prick and Bella strikes me as a worthless twit. no I didn't read the ending but I assume neither are punished enough for their vices for me to consider it worthwhile, now if you'll excuse me I'm off to read cryptonomicon

calm down, ok? i didn't say you had to agree with me. everytime you mention 'twilight sucks' you mention sarah's rant on it, that sarah said this, etc. i want to know what YOU think, and not just have you going along with what Sarah said. my point was, if you were going to just follow anyone's point of view, why not follow mine and think it's great?
to be hones,t i don't think Edward is some hero with a dark side; i don't think that's the point. he's just a person living with his curse (his words, not mine) as best he can. he has some 'hero' moments of coming to Bella's rescue, but i don't think he's ever trying to be a hero. as for bella being worthless... i'm surprised at you. I would think you of all people would understand that no one is worthless. like her or not, but no person is worthless. she's a quiet, curious girl, who doesn't stand out much; that's kind of the point. she's supposed to be an 'everyman' kind of character that most people can relate too, especially the meekish, romance reading girly type. to be blunt, she's perfect in that role. i'm actually surprised you don't see that.
abyssion1337
04-02-2009, 06:36 PM
I can see it I just disagree with that assessment, also I think Edward is just using "curse" as an excuse to get away with whatever he wants anyway to wrap things up, I think they missed the point of the idea as I've seen it implemented in much better ways and that the only reason Twilight is getting the reception it is, is because this is the first time it's hit the mainstream media

my god, vampire romance is pretty much the bottom of the barrel, you have to be pretty talented to not just produce something that seems to be an exercise in torturing people and killing trees, but really; this vampiremania has to stop, Twilight is just a terrible story which can be summed up: Girl gives up college for stalker
Odessa
06-01-2009, 05:44 PM

06-01-2009, 05:50 PM
you really don't want to go down this path with me so I'm saying this right now: Twilight is crap and I don't really care that the average american is taken into any kind of crap that an untalented author slops down in front them just cause it has a vampire but when someone has a dissenting opinion about it, you need to stop making it about their personality because that pretty much makes you a redneck so cut it out.
Odessa
06-01-2009, 05:53 PM
oh relax already. we have different opinions, that doesn't make me a redneck. all i'm saying is your opinion is uninformed since you have not read the books, and you're going by second hand accounts and your own bias. if you're going to have such a strong opinion on the subject, you should educate yourself first as it makes you look ignorant.

interesting ill give dante a read when i get time
Odessa
06-03-2009, 02:56 AM
Paradise lost is a great read, same for Dante. I've done a ton of work on those two works, having done my Master's research into Paradise lost, and I did my BA's thesis on Dante's inferno. It really gets into the particulars of heaven and hell, and of faith in general.
You might enjoy the 'challenge' of paradise lost. Milton makes the devil sympathetic in his book, and the debate rages: was Milton a Satanist and didn't know it, or is it a test? If by feeling sympathy for the devil, we are ignoring the goodness of God? I support the devil myself, and find plenty of evidence there to support my claim, but there's plenty of evidence to go the other way as well.
(cough) sorry, showing off my lit credentials for a moment. I really miss teaching this stuff.
abyssion1337
06-03-2009, 06:13 PM
actually the point is to show that things are never black and white, while I'm not doubting your credentials you fell into the trap of overthinking things to seem smarter, that's not to say you are incorrect but you're not looking at this on enough levels. I think that Dante's work reflects some more interesting themes, while satan is a mindless beast god isn't much better, especially in paradiso where heaven is divided into nine spheres to segregate people, god comes off as an elitist prick and the conversation dante has with him doesn't help much. though if you want interesting read any of Terry Pratchet's discworld books that involve death, he's one of the greatest characters ever though now that he's facing his own mortality a lot of us were shocked when in a recent non-discworld book death was cold and pitiless.

Fortissimo, I've got the omnibus too. I remember taking ti with me to school in middle school for a week only to realise it was rather impractical for reading on the go. >_<
N8theGr8: yeah, recently I haven't read much of anything over 200 pages (with more than 10 sentences on each page) that wasn't a technical book, or related to Japanese pop culture. >_> I guess, unless you count (Haruki) Murakami's books.. but even that was a while ago. Just been doing other stuff with my larger chunks of free time, so I wouldn't say its a regret, just a choice.
Figured I'd comment since I have a friend that really loves the Wheel of Time series. It's good to see others are into it too. :P (Though, I haven't touched them yet.)

i know ^^
I can read a 700ish page book in about 2 hours if i rush it or if its really good but at average speeds ill finish it in 5-6 hours, sadly though the only books i read are fantasy books and ive read virtually all of the good ones in existance, my book shelves have about 500 books on them
abyssion1337
08-09-2010, 12:43 AM
I consider myself an fairly expedient reader, so I find that fairly impressive (unless I'm just reading bigger and harder books than you are, probably since Catch-22 is complicated and you're not really getting if you're rushing through it)
Fishfreeek
08-09-2010, 01:08 AM
although i have read a lot of childrens books the majority are "bigger and harder" books and although i read quickly i dont consider it rushing as i take all the words in (unless i have work or somthing i like 2 mins in which case Ill skim finish whatever chapter im on )
also I havent heard of Catch-22, is it a fantasy book??
abyssion1337
08-09-2010, 01:25 AM
not in the slightest, which is another thing, my intention isn't to troll but fantasy novels aren't exactly big or hard, not for the most part anyway. I mean I read huge substantial books, I'm not saying those don't exist in the fantasy genre, The Once and Future King is one of my favorite books and it's pretty substantial
