Too bad there wasn't a 'chapter' thing made.

But I guess there's too many clips for it to be rational to do so.

Since we're all offering up opinions.....
If I don't mention a specific scene it's because I either didn't find it funny enough to merit mention, OR pointless enough.

The "Wrath of Khan" reference- clever enough, and not sure where but I get the feeling the point could be made in less time.

"Nyan Cat" Death Note (@ 8:00) funny enough, just needs to be about half as much of the part with Ruk (sp?)

8:28 ish- "Deadman Wonderland"- I like this one.

8:45 ish- I just don't get it- poor audio of a "Street tough" threating someone, maybe I just haven't seen the Anime. OTOH, I've never seen "Revolutionary Girl Utena" but much that has been offered in prior AMVHell's was quite funny.

8:50 Me like. This despite my thinking "Evangelion" IS our version of a Dead Horse.

9:40 Cuteness. I think that's a good AMVHell clip.

10:04 I've seen a lot of criticism for this one, but I grew up with "The A-Team", and I like it.

10:24 WTF?

10:43 Groundhog Day- I can see the complaints, but I can also see the the case for the superimposition. OTOH, if you have to explain the joke is it really good enough for what has been (IMHO) a semi-professional series until now?

11:09 "Crazy Train". It's got the end of the world theme, and Haruhi knows I love Ozzy. It's not an inappropriate clip. I'm just somehow left feeling there should have been a better Train clip out there. OTOH, I've tried making a clip and I got nothing I think is worth submitting, so....

12:00 I could swear I've seen that clip before, but it might just me remembering "Airplane!"

12:25 again, WTF??

13:15 WAY too long.

13:20 Angel Beats: You can cut this clip at the point where they say "Three way". That's the joke. Got it. Enough.

19:12 For me, this is the first real belly laugh.

20:06 The My Little Pony god Only Knows. Love it. Quick, concise, to the point joke.

23:13 Seriously?? TEXT on the screen??

23:50 Maybe it's just me not knowing the Anime but how does the Oompa-Loompa song fit here??

23:57 Squid Girl rocks. So does this clip's Editor.

"Frenemies". Good work there.

32:40 The Shark clip. This could stop as soon as they show Kisami's teeth. It would be better if it did.

Hercules. Not bad, and I see where the joke isn't quite right if you don't go all the way to the end.

35:10 now THERE's the Crazy Train clip I wanted.

37:32 One Piece. just..... weak.

38:24 Clannad Afterstory/ Kiss From a Rose. I see what the editor was trying for, and unusually (IMO) this one was actually too short. It needed to go to (and include) the first chorus.

38:43 It is. admittedly, a personal prejudice but I could have gone on quite nicely without seeing that one. Of course, I thought Lucy's reaction to the puppy murder in "Elfen Lied" was entirely appropriate, so.........

Cat Scratch Fever...... like.

39:35 Another WTF?? I.E. Never heard the song before, don't recognize the Anime and it appears to be pointless time-padding.

OTOH, it's followed by two nicely done, clever bits.

42:18 BWAHAHAHAHA!!!! I love those two.

43:43 I know this one is nitpicky, but...... some songs are so good in their original form that remakes are pointless and should be ignored. Any song off of "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" fall into that category.

43:59 God, the expression on Ed's face is just so perfect.......

45:58 Now there's an End of the World video.

48:13 BRILLIANT. Especially the shot of Van Halen at just the right spot.

Kamina as Johnny Bravo. Boy, does that work.

1:10:59 Thundersiamese HO!

1:11:45 Aren't watermarks, station ID's and any other sort of writing one of the Mortal Sins of AMVHell?

1:18:44 Huh?

That's what I got. Your mileage etc., etc.

You
A Girl who lept through time clip......****ING JOY GUESS WHAT CLIP OUT OF THE THOUSANDS OF SECONDS AND FRAMES OF ANIMATION IN THAT MOVIE WAS USED?! I can see the association that doesn't make it good. Kill it!

I am going to take a stand. Aside from do a Barrel roll have we had ANY OTHER CLIP!! of girl who lept through time!?

Yep. A clip in AMV Hell 5 uses that movie to make a "Dr. Who" parody, and the bicycle scene does not appear at all in that particular clip. Meanwhile, one of the other two GWLTT clips in 5 is basically a copy of this one, but the remaining one (the "Don't Stop Believing" clip) has a good amount of other footage.

You can just indicate in the comment that it is a resubmission. I should be able to figure it out though.

So i woke up in the early hours of the morning and watched this (im late,, yes.) and here is my overall review:

Overall, i'd give it a 3/5. Pretty much going to say just about what everyone said for this:

-There were quite a number of overused jokes in this video that have been used too much in the past before. I counted about 15 horribly overused jokes and clips. Compared to the other amv hells, this is a lot. Kill em. Kill em all.

-There were too many bad/"punny" jokes. Some of the punny ones were pretty funny however.

-For God's sake, PLEASE SHORTEN the LONG CLIPS. Thank you.
*going with this, please shorten the opening by like...half. It was long. Really. LONG.*

-I did find some of the clips funny though. Even if I just merely chuckled at them. Glad to know that more entries are going to be up for submission so its possible to revive this.

As just a suggestion, there should be a poll on which clips to keep, so that there is an idea of what we as the watchers liked. Overall, I'm excited to see what the final product is going to be. Good luck to you polishing this rock. C:

Yeah I think we will be needing one. It will help once the credit list is more complete so we an identify the clips better, time stamps and all.

Oh yeah the Dr. Who one that was a greatly well made too....something alot of these clips are missing. As AMV Hell 6 I think is going to get remodeled greatly, we cant scream too much about this clip of GWLTT as after seeing Mottoks and Haars compilation of the rejects in Paradise....wow...just wow.

This is AMV Hell 6 Paradise before AMV 6 is even released.

Carnival Phantasm/Hercules - A little long but great nonetheless. I wouldn't change it.

Don't Know/You've got the touch - Its good but that song is starting to get a little overused in my opinion.

High School of the Dead/Zombieland - Could have been better but I guess its okay.
Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka/Back that ass up - This ones pretty amusing.
Utena/Fresh Prince - Fresh Prince has been used before but this ones great. The audio matches the clip very well.
Hell Girl/Highway to Hell - Okay but another I wouldn't miss if cut.
Russia/Russian theme - Not good and too long. Cut it completely.
Don't know/Music of heaven and hell - This is another one where I think the joke is all in the audio.
Mecha anime/constellation fight - Didn't care for this one.
Azumanga/Totem dream thingy - Its alright.
Utena/Jizz in my pants - This ones another to definitely keep.
Welcome to the NHK/Avatar song - Another song that needs to stop being used. I'd cut both clips that use it but if you want to keep one then I guess make it this one.

DBZ/Wait for it - Didn't find anything too great about this one.
Don't know/Dust in the wind - Didn't care for it.
Blood+?/Beatman aids - Okay. Wouldn't miss it though if it weren't in the final cut.
Blood-C/Poke out my eye - I liked this one.

Don't know/Knockin on heaven's door - Didn't care for this one.

One Piece/Zombie - Okay. Went on for too long though.
Random toilet/Don't know - Didn't care for this one.
Utena/Transformers - Seen something very similar to it before. I'd say cut it in favor of something more original.
FMA/Bulletproof - Another alright one that might be better if it was cut shorter.
TTGL/Johnny Bravo - This one was done real well. A keeper for the final cut.

Detroit Metal City?/Power Ranger - Short and funny.
Yugioh/DnD - Pretty good.
Kissing scenes/Gotta catch em all - Don't really get it. Cutting it would be my preference.

Sergeant Frog/Ain't that cute - Okay but could also be cut shorter.
FMA/Sneaking armor - This one is pretty good.
Redline?/robots - It was okay. Wouldn't miss it if it were cut though.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time/Lame joke song - This clip is all around lame. Lame song to an overused scene thats also dragged out. Axe it, kill it, and throw it in a fire.
Hat wearing person/En garde fighting clip - Pretty good. Another pretty enjoyable one.
Angel Beats/When angels deserve to die - An okay clip.
Touhou/Devil's Night - Pretty good. Wish the anime matched up with the lyrics more but with the lack of animated Touhou stuff what are you gonna do.
Princess Mononoke/Snickers - I think the whole beginning of the clip could be cut out and it should begin around when she says eat this. Pretty great otherwise though.
Bleach/Cold as Ice - An okay clip. Nothing too good about it though.

Yugioh/Tetris - See above.
Ouran High School Host Club/Simultaneous Loving - Pretty good.
DBZ/Southpark - This one I liked.

Sailor Moon/Sharp Dressed Man - It simply doesn't match up to the Hellsing clip from 3.
Hellsing/Archer - It was okay but I didn't really like it.
One Piece/Fat Albert - Not that good and should probably at least be cut shorter.
High School of the Dead/Walking Dead - Definitely needs to be cut shorter.
Thundercats?'Siamese - An alright one.
High School of the Dead - Alright but I'm kind of getting tired of seeing this anime used by now.
K-On/Voice in my head - Didn't really get it or find it funny. Cut it.
Dancer anime/In love with a stripper - Didn't care for it much.
High School of the Dead/Dr. Faggot - Didn't really get it or find it funny. Another one that should be axed in my opinion.
Poni Poni Poemi/Horse song - Short and somewhat funny.
Ranma/Designing woman - Pretty good.
Excel Saga/The roof is on fire - The video clip is kind of overused but its still an alright clip.
Classroom/Metal Gear - Kinda funny.
Another/Everyone has aids - Pretty funny. It does help that the anime clips themselves would be pretty funny even without the song too.
Excel Saga/Eleminate my enemy - I guess it works.
Nichijou/Threw it on the ground - Guess I should have expected this song to come up somewhere. At least its a short clip.
Army girls anime/lost whatever amount of men - To be honest I found it kind of boring.
Don't know/Liking jazz - Alright. I guess this one kind of makes the other one retroactively funny in a way.
MIdget fighting dinosaur - The video clip really overshadows the audio in my opinion.
P&SwG/Southpark - Its alright.
Mahjong clip/random trying to be epic music - Not funny or anything. Get rid of it.
Higurashi/Poison town song - Pretty good.
Giant babies/babies song - Its an okay clip.
Soul Eater/Charlie Sheen remix - Not funny and too long so just get rid of it altogether.
Eva/Starbucks - Nice continuation of the earlier joke.
Meteors falling/End of days song - Not that good. I'd say cut it.
One Piece/Captain Jack Sparrow song - Pretty good.
Another/God says no - Pretty funny.
YYH/Powerthirst - Another pretty funny one.
FotNS/Combo Breaker - Another one worth keeping in I think
Madoka/Austin Powers - Its about as funny as it is in the movie. I'd say cut it just so you don't spoil the anime for people.

These are just my opinions and I know I didn't provide any real constructive criticism as I'm not really experienced in making videos and such but I just wanted to get out want I experienced just from an entertainment standpoint. Most of the ones I simply said were okay I probably wouldn't miss if they were cut. There are a lot of HIgh School of the Dead clips towards the end. Some were alright others not so much. I'd recommend cutting a couple of them or spacing them out better. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time bike clips felt extremely uninspired and by now everyone knows what happens in that scene. Who knows how this would have turned out had it gone through the final editing though. There are lots of clips that could be replaced so its a good thing it seems like a lot of people are submitting new clips or reediting old ones. I'm going to try and submit a clip this time I've had half finished for the longest time so I can contribute a bit rather than just bitching and stuff.

Taking out the flashing actually lets me see the nice syncing you did in all of it. That's a really good clip now.

Also Mattroks I would if I could....I would...If I could...I would also be in College or progressed to University right now, studying Media or Journalism as I would love to write articles and such, I had compliments on my articles as the best in class when I was at College, had a whole class thank me for the tutoring them and saying if it wasn't for me they wouldn't have passed....I was one out of two people who failed the same thing I tutored people on...the other person was really dumb... I was best in class for most classes......and failed them in the end..sorry Mattroks it is a wish I really strongly wish I could full fill, more than to make you happy.

Also I am usually not that bad.

Ok last ten minutes. I can do this.

High School of the Walking Dead, Its long the joke is weak, nothing to fancy on editing. Id say cut it.

Thunder Cats "We are Siamese" Its a little weak on a second viewing, however its certainly worth watching and is good, its one of the weaker great clips however an excellent good clip. Keep it.

High School of the Dead. "kill the ghoul" song. Nothing wow worthy editing, the songs muffles itself meaning the jokes not clear, its weak a joke when you realise......and gooooood no the length and just watching a radio...and then nothing of worth in on all. Cut it.

K-on? "Voice in my head" Its a decent clip and Id say its worth keeping it, its kind of funny and then out of no wear "I want a monkey!" It will get most people to laugh Id think. Keep it.

Perfect Blue "in love with a stripper. Its not bad, its not good. Its ok. Wouldn't be missed if cut.

High School of the dead. "Dr Faggot" I am not sure, as a whole clip its not worth keeping too long. However cut it up into two clips. Might work, as the first one Is decent on its own HOWEVER! Much later is NOT needed. For the second part it might be fine...more so if there was a little bit more of a lead up. It would work if a little more work was put into it.

Puni puni poemi "loot at my hours" Its a little off editing wise. Its sort of ok....... wouldn't be missed if cut.

Ranma 1/2 and Jem. Its a really nice clip, Id say its worth keeping, also good quality for a Ranma clip and a decent effort on the Lip syncing.

Excel Saga "Roof is on fire" Its ok, sort of nice the last pose of Excel, its decent editing. Id say it would be nice to keep, however it could go missing.

Metal gear sound clip. The Idea could work.....if there was a little more correlation to the sound clip and the video clip. The lip syncing isnt good and the clipa nd sound dont work when "intruder to the left!" is played. The class all looking to the left that works. Just not the first part. Id say cut it unless a nicer and tighter version is resubmitted.

"Everyone has Aids." It sort of works. However the close up on the knife ruins the joke. Cut that and its a better clip....good? I wouldnt say so. Easily cut if wanted.

Excel Saga "eliminate my "anime" It is a pretty poor joke and clip...except I think its so cheesy its worth keeping. So than people can facepalm not at a bad clip but a cheesy joke.

"Threw it on the ground" I think this clip shouldn't be allowed as AMV Hell Minis already had announced the last ever clip of threw it on the ground with the Cromartie high? clip and shouting "NO! God NO! NOOOOOOOOOOO!" that was the mark of self recognition that unless there is some masterfull threw it on the ground clip....its not allowed.

"Lost my men" its an ok clip, made pretty well. Its fine enough Id say keep it as its a neat little thing.

"you'll be loving jazz" I think there is an in joke to the anime in it, however it is decent enough to keep.

Dinosaurs fighting. Its not much of anything....most of it is just music over a scene with a little bit of editing...I dont think its worth keeping.

Panty and Stocking with South Park clip. Its a bit bad on the editing....I is ok is on the joke wise. It could be cut.

Mah-jong game. Anything of worth comes from the anime itself, the ludicrousness of General Mao and other Eastern leaders playing Mahjong, so there is a second episode of these after the Kim-Jong-Ill one? Ill have to look it up, as the last one even thou it was a Raw video, funny as hell. Ps Cut this clip.

"I like my town with a little drop of Poison." Its decent. Id say keep it.

Weebles "Im making babies" I like the idea, the clip itself its poor. If it was edited better, its starts off in the middle of "Watch out I am eating bagel!" the babies have descend....there no match to the audio or video. The idea is nice but could be done alot better.

Nope nope **** off nope. Its the Charlie Sheen Soul eater one. Its not great its too long. Kill it. Decent editing...poor idea also poor choice on the version Winning song, that one is ****.

I cant really describe the clip except if I say "BS HI" youll all know the exact clip...since ITS GOT THAT WATER MARK AT THE TOP RIGHT OF THE CLIP!!!! Clips **** aswell.....and considering we get SSTGWNTBD end of the world end clip...beats the pants of this one and to have it so close...nah cut it on all reasons.

One Piece "Tale of Captain Jack Sparrow." I think we have had this clip before? Id say cut it, if someone really argued for it it could maybe slide in. However I dont think it should stay.

"says No" clip, I dont know....It could be gotten rid of. Id say the Jack Black clip could do with being put in better and higher quality.

"perposterone" Yu Yu Hakusho. Id says its pretty decent and should stay.

Fist of the north star. Its kind of nice, id say keep it.

"Hey Hey Hey!" Its a clip of randomness and I think we need a nice clip of randomness, its kinda of fun. Id keep it.

"Get a "head" in life." I like it...just the start dosnt help it. If you put something else in like Elfen Lied clip. There is a head coming off in the first ep int he first 10 mins so dont need to look around too much. It would be a better clip.

And that is it....we come to SSGWNBTD's finale of a clip. ( I at-least heavily assume he did it himself.)

If there was an argument to keep AMV Hell 6 as is...this is it. If anything it makes you feel like he went through all the entries cutting up and making this end clip, then decided to put all those clips into AMV Hell 6 out of obligation and just so he could have his last and decent clip.

Its a really nice clip however with the amount of editing I expect AMV Hell 6 to go under. I dont think half of clips used in that will survive and that is my low ball number.

Overall, it starts off ok...then gets bogged down.....comes up a few point sand then its just one loooooooooooong ****ing stretch of absolute **** after ****. until about the last 10 minutes were things perk up a little.

There is quality dips and such. Those dont bother me as much as bad concepts, out of sync audio (which was rare and can be fixed) and also....****ing water marks. How? What? Why? The clips those water marks on aren't that good either.

So people are useing the 1 to 5 scale. Ill back trace and rate AMV Hell 3 and to 5 first.

Amv Hell 3 5/5 Amv Hell 4 4/5 Amv Hell 5 4/5 Amv minis best off with Iron Editor is 5/5 however it is alot shorter.

Amv hell 6 Rough cut 1/5 If I could go 0 I would. I can see that alot of weak or mediocre clips will survive if they are needed. Thats fine, I hope the surge of new clips helps it and some good can come out of it. If it just need a little more padding. Sure I can take a dip in useing a number of the not so good clips.

Watching Mattocks and Haars compilation of past rejects in the paradise series there is too many similarities. However Paradise does collect alot worse, jesus that "karate Kick your ass" Panty Stockings one made me cringe so badly my eyes almost went too far back into my skull. All that just for "RRRRRRRRRUUULES".

Also live action clips? I hope that was for AMV Minis Live action special otherwise. Who submits live action clips?! They were also terrible.

Id love to try and help, be part of the solution than the problem, however my criticism is the only thing I have....I have Windows movie maker....except that would be part of the problem not the solution.

I hope this pulls threw. Even if the next incarnation got a 3/5 in my eyes I would take that as a win.

Thanks to the magic of stupidity and laziness being ever-abundant online, a lot of folks don't understand the concept of NOT using stuff they randomly found on YouTube, even if they've been here for a while, so I'd say... a 2 years worth of browsing or less?

I know being a watcher, not a maker, might make my views seem less important but...

For AMVHELL, or at least the MAIN SERIES, the source quality for clips should be AT LEAST DVD-Rips, if not WEB-DL or BR-Rips.

Grabbing random **** from youtube just makes it look less...'professional'?

I am much the same as Tanis in understanding and position. I don't even know how I know Water marks are bad and banned for AMV Hell, I just knew.

I think what is worse, is when they use a clip with a broadcaster logo on it then the next clip doesn't and then cuts back to one with the same watermark.

The Yugioh Abridged FMA "My voice is stupid....and I have armour." clip was a culprit. Other wise I think that is them with their own Watermark to go "HEY EVERYBODY! THIS IS MY CLIP!"

Reading the start of the thread I was seeing people say "Hey I got excited when my clip came up!" and then turns out it was a not so good to terrible one...and yet they still took pride.

On top of that and since number of more veteran and respected editors I don't think I can argue too much. A number of editors saying "I threw this crap clip in. I did not think it was good enough. Yet it made it in."

On the surface you go "Why send it in if you thought it was bad?" Comedy greatness has come about from such accidents and other famed hits in the world. Why not chance your luck?

As an editor, I actually share the same view as you. What passes for personal viewing doesn't fly as well for things meant to be shown off to the public for what I'm assuming is supposed to make the submitter proud for submitting. Some of this stuff was on the same level as making a camcorder Let's Play. This ties into my earlier disappointment about the HD version being canceled due to people not using proper footage. I get that some people were using DVD-sourced material, but it was pretty obvious that others were using downloaded stuff. I figure, "If you're gonna use downloaded footage, at least do it correctly and not with something that makes RealMedia fansubs from a decade ago look good."

Grabbing random **** from youtube just makes it look less...'professional'?
I'm assuming some were more concerned with their own glory, rather than being concerned with professionalism.

The whole ripping **** from youtube topic just gave me a couple idea.
1. Any video submitted with watermarks should not be allowed unless they are the name of the clips editor.
2. Any clip that can be seen in multiple videos on youtube should not be allowed due to overuse and possible copypasta of others works.

adzman
12-27-2012, 12:59 AM
Both those rules are supposed to be stead fast anyway. But they're lax on the first one for some reason, and the second is hard to enforce. No one person can know of all clips ever made.

That's already a rule, which is seldom followed. In Minis, at least.
http://i.imgur.com/gBzmD.png
On that note, I'm more bothered by bad footage than station logos. Sure, the latter can be cropped out pretty easily, but the former is essentially inexcusable. It's even funnier when you consider the fact that Zarx even mentions Nyaatorrents in his guide that no one reads, despite it even being in his signature.

2. Any clip that can be seen in multiple videos on youtube should not be allowed due to overuse and possible copypasta of others works.
As adz said, that's a bit too much effort, but there's probably some sort of threshold where it's obvious to anyone that a joke has been overused.

I'd like to change pace and talk about a few of the clips that I thought were really good:

Avatar/we are young - Good job. That song was begging to have a literal parody of it made, and that scene from avatar worked very well, and you kept it pretty short.

Soul Eater/charlie sheen interview remix - Great job! I do not understand how people could not have liked it. I browse the **** out of the internet and never knew someone put that retarded interview to music. So, knowing the source of the song, I thought it was very funny and fit well with that mentally unstable character from Soul Eater. i found the length OK because you kept up with interesting visuals (maybe too much chair rolling) and the whole song is funny.

Nichijou/Threw it on the ground - Perfect! Short, awesome visual and anyone could get the joke instantly. I don't care what anyone says, you (the editor) made that bit of animation look bad-ass and IMO that is what AMVhells are all about. I don't know if you slowed it down that first half second or what, but I salute you. I can overlook the fact that the audio clip is a joke in and of itself.

I liked quite a few of the clips, but the biggest problem for me was the presence of watermarks and low quality video footage. I think those clips should be dropped if the editors don't resubmit a higher quality/watermarkless version. I compiled a list of the ones I caught.

Avatar/we are young - Good job. That song was begging to have a literal parody of it made, and that scene from avatar worked very well, and you kept it pretty short.

This clip went on too long before it got to the joke, and it was horrible, horrible quality. Unforgivable, inexcusable quality.

Soul Eater/charlie sheen interview remix - Great job! I do not understand how people could not have liked it. Let me see what happens when I browse the **** out of the internet for Charlie Sheen Remix. (http://bit.ly/W5TPp0)

Not only was that clip over a minute long, but it's a joke that was done before. It was done in the minis. This clip could have gotten it's point across in only 15 seconds or less. This clip was long enough to be a stand alone AMV all by itself. This kind of thing is what is killing the AMV Hells.

Nichijou/Threw it on the ground - Perfect! Short, awesome visual and anyone could get the joke instantly. This joke has been done. It has been done. It has been done, and it has been done. And ya know what? It wasn't funny the first 50 times it was done. The only saving grace of this clip was it wasn't absolute horrid quality like the majority of AMV Hell 6.

Ya know what, AMV Hell 6 had a lot of bad stuff in it, and some good stuff in it. Nothing more can be learned by talking about how bad/good AMV Hell 6 was. The next step is for us to go out and make better clips to make AMV Hell 6 better. If you are just going to talk about how bad/good AMV Hell 6 was at this point, then you are not contributing anything of value.

Yes I agree since we have figured that a lot of AMV Hell 6 can/should be cut and probably will be cut. We need stuff to fill it, better stuff.

I dont know if at this point I or anyone else should throw to Zarxrax list much like above to help in the clips that 100% should be cut for quality reasons and more.
or is it obvious?

I was going to make a clip or two. Except when running through the scenario of making them I realised I cannot do it, My DVD rewriter drive broke two years ago and I would be using Window Movie Maker, which Zarxrax me and everyone else already knows that is a terrible idea. The more I visualize the clip the more its not very good.

There is nothing I can do except hope for everyone else to help AMV Hell 6.

The arcane arts of apathy and irony?

Also, I'd like to point out that not everyone on YouTube is a complete idiot. Rather, the site is merely overrun with them, making the good people hard to find. The term "YouTube children" pretty much only applies to, well, children (or adults with the skill and work ethic of children) on YouTube that can't do this sort of stuff all that easily. My use of the term is fairly different than what I'm assuming AMV.org meant when they talked about YouTube a few years back, around the time they actually wordfiltered it so people couldn't possibly say the name, due to it being "beneath them."

Just a reminder for everyone submitting new videos.
Please use DROPBOX.
Using other download sites which may limit the number of files I can download or might make we wait several minutes (or hours) before downloading a file puts a lot of unnecessary difficulty on me when I have well over 100 entries to download. Vimeo is also not great because I have to rename the files after I download them from there.

So please, just use Dropbox.

It takes almost nothing to have everybody start spewing venom in your direction. Being from youtube or providing youtube links is surefire way to make people ignore you entirely.
I already have a hard time getting any kind draw for my stuff.
I don't use Vegas. I don't rip my own DVD's. I don't use current music. And I don't bloat my work with cheesy effects.
The community is a completely different level of stuck-up, and I've pretty much given up trying to fit in with them.

I'm still trying and failing to impress them, for some reason. Only a matter of time until I quit. I realized how screwed up the site was once I saw that Bonehimer's thread for Mecha Hell only got one comment, which was yours anyway, despite that being an exceptional video. Fairly sure that the driving force behind popularity on that site is still money. They won't really pay much attention to non-donators, from what I've seen. Now, I do use Vegas and I do rip my own DVDs from time to time, but I don't act like a total assface over it.

Okay, I believe I commented earlier, but here goes

5:07-5:23
Shadow66
Clannad After Story
Star Wars: Episode 3 - Soundclip

Could use better quality (aka get Clannad AS in 1080) and the sound effect of the laser-saber-extending need to be edited slightly, as you hear the light-saber-extending effect twice for Aiko bringing out his (I'm sure they showed the shop clerk extending his too). That is all, with that it'll be a great clip

6:00-6:28
Shadow66
Xenosaga
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Sound Clip

I can see the joke, it was all together okay, but I hated this (there was a Pokemon "Khan" one that was far better), didn't help the guy on the screen starting laughing which went against the audio you were using. Otherwise, not a bad clip - I guess a few edits and maybe changing the colour tone might get the idea of the scene across better

13:13-13:52
Shadow66
Hetalia
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Ehhhh, I didn't like it, it wasn't the quality, or the audio, I can't even say if it was the length, but this was a clip that as soon as it started my brain turned off -it got no reaction from me.

16:13-16:36
Shadow66
Hetalia
Weird Al Yankovic - Canadian Idiot

NO! There are SO MANY better Weird Al songs, why do people always use the ones we've heard before and hurt my ear-drums. Also I feel if you can't find scenes, in an anime, to go along with the song, you shouldn't be trying to use said anime - find one that does have the scenes you want. PS: Jokes been done before -this has nothing to do with the quality -only I feel AMV HELL entries should try to be original.

20:41-20:46
Shadow66
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ugly Americans - Soundclip

Nothing wrong with it, BUT long ago there was a scarface audio clip using that same anime scene -IT WAS BETTER QUALITY

37:44-38:14
Shadow66
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Fun - We Are Young

Ignoring this isn't anime I'd like to say BETTER QUALITY VIDEO PLS -that is all

41:25-41:44
Shadow66
Lucky Star
Paul Blart: Mall Cop - Soundclip

...GOOD JOB (nothing needs to be done, it's great, but you could still get 1080 video if you want it to look great too)

44:36-44:50
Shadow66
Death Note
Invader Zim - Soundclip

...GOOD JOB!

46:32-46:53
Shadow66
My Bride is a Mermaid
Twilight Zone - Theme Song

I know you can't really get this in higher quality and the joke was fine, so I'd say the problem was the shows poor animation that put me off.

49:06-49:57
Shadow66
Hetalia
Red Army Choir - National Anthem Of The USSR

Hated it, Hetalia has such a budget animation and all the characters look samely -so how am I supposed to find this funny! How!?

58:18-58:24
Shadow66
Hetalia The Movie: Paint It White
Independence Day - Soundclip

0_0 kaay, now here's a GOOD clip in GOOD quality, EXPLAIN THIS TO ME!?

66:36-66:55
Shadow66
Cowboy Bebop
Death Note: The Live Action Movie - Soundclip

Seemed okay, but didn't like it

70:20-70:56
Shadow66
High School of the Dead
The Walking Dead - Opening

Now please, THIS ONE COULD BE BRILLIANT, just redo it in 1080 quality (I know I'm being a bitch about quality, but watching AMV Hell 3,4 and 5 the quality is great -even for lower resolutions)

71:15-71:45
Shadow66
High School of the Dead
Creature Feature - Aim For The Head

This...didn't gel with me, if sounded like an old "creature feature" clip that might have worked better with an older anime...also could do with better quality video.

There was also another clip that used that same song to better effect in AMV Hell 5. I know that the "it's been done before" argument has been floated a lot, but in this case I definitely preferred the previous version.

Also, I'll just say this now: please, for the love of god, STOP making clips with "I Threw It On the Ground". I don't even remember if there was a clip in this video that used that song, but it's been done so many times that metafictional references are now being made (as in, the clip in the last episode of Minis S2), and when that happens, it's really, really time to stop.

My biggest question is why those keep getting accepted. I understand occasionally forgetting what was in which episode, even for a judge, but I think there's a bit of a limit to the amount of times that excuse can be used.

Strangely enough, even when I'm a fan of something, I won't automatically find a clip a bit more enjoyable. Now, one of the hardest things to get past when it comes to editing is getting past Youtube's Content ID system. Obviously, some people have managed to find ways to either appease the Youtube gods or just sneak around the Content ID. My question is how this is done -- any way that keeps content from being "blocked in some countries" will greatly help with editing and uploading.

Semi-on topic, do you really think our guide will even be able to help these people, Matt? Yes, I know that sounds pretty conceited and I know I'm generalizing like there's no tomorrow, but I thought that Google was a fairly simple thing at this point. You want feedback on this piece of ****? Okay, I'll give you feedback.

ROUGH is the operative word here ladies and gentlemen. It's a poorly formatted, haphazardly edited mess with overly long clips that feature little to no humor. The title sequence alone was enough of a harbinger of the insufferable quality within the feature presentation.
The jokes, to clarify, are few and far between. What this features are aimless AMVs in their most diluted form; simply adding what is presumably the creator's favorite music to a clip of anime that would "make it look cool", failing to adhere to any kind of humor and emphasizing style over substance. The tentative theme of this production was the end of world, due to the Mayan prophecy but the theme is missing from the main arc of the production. I must concede however, that I am only familiar with roughly 55% of the animes featured, so the context of the clips used may have gone over my head in many cases. The production began to lean towards the recycling of music in a few instances, but not to the extent of AMV Hell 5, though in the latter's case that has been said to arguably be the running joke. These "repeat jokes" are weak at best, with the two Nyan Cat clips being wholly unnecessary despite one clip modestly rehashing the recurring gag of AMV Hell 3. The very first Nyan Cat clip in Minis was the only time it was used effectively and well-edited to boot.
Video formatting is a mess, something I know Zarxrax is a stickler about. While the sudden and seamless, "full-screen, letterbox, windowbox, pillarbox" aspect ratio changes among clips has been around since the very first AM Hell and has not been a huge, glaring issue before, the sub-par quality of the various clips makes it very, very noticeable to the point of distraction. To my knowledge this is not always preventable on a technical level without having the video quality suffer as a result, and of course not every anime is letterboxed and so forth, but when the clips run for so long and transition to a longer clip with a different aspect ratio, it hurts the quick, one-two punchline potential that earlier AMV Hells excelled at.
Audio quality is still hit or miss, and I understand from personal experience that if you only have so many resources to work with when ripping audio that it's not going to be perfect. I viewed this without headphones, so there were times when the volume would suddenly drop. Given the length of the clips, it gives me time to alter my volume accordingly, but backfires if the following clip has louder audio, prompting a sudden cacophony of noise that needs to be lowered in order to enjoy. I feel sorry for anyone who had to view this at a convention with speakers, as the audio jumps can be very jarring to say the least.
On a side note, and this simply appeals to me (possibly exclusively), I enjoyed the variety of source material as always but this time it came from stuff I am a fan of: Two Best Friends Play, Lewis Black, and Metal Gear Solid just a name a few.
Overall, this needs A LOT OF POLISH. Possibly more than any compilation of AMVs I have ever watched. At the moment I'm unsure if it should be lined up with the rest of the AMV Hell.
2012 has now become host to two severely underwhelming sixth main entries to great series: Resident Evil 6 and AMV Hell 6. Both of those need fixing post haste.
Please, everybody contribute and help out so Zarx can fix. this. MESS.

After watching AH6 it a 2nd time, I noticed that:
* about 1/3 of the clips are actually pretty good
* another 1/3 would be OK if they were half the length

So Zarx, if you are reading this: cut deep! Better to have a 45 minute AH6 that can stand alongside its predecessors than an 80 minute yawnfest.

I feel like it's the atmosphere that needs work. If it's the end of the universe, why do we have fighting and wars in crap early on? That kind of stuff needs to be more toward the middle. Everything with explosions comes in the last quarter and then it ends with a few clips like that "in the center of a dead planet" clip (at 6:00). The progression matches the title and the atmosphere works.

(Yes, I joined with the sole purpose of giving my thoughts on the result of this project. Nonetheless...)

You guys are really being picky here. It really wasn't all that bad. Granted, for many of the clips you needed context to understand the jokes, but they were still funny in their own right. The first thing I did after watching the video in full was to create a shortened one for personal viewing. Of the 82 minutes worth of clips (including intro and credit songs), I still found 36 minutes that I felt were funny or otherwise well crafted. Yes, 44% is still a failing grade, but you have to give the producers credit for trying. Personally, I think this is far better than 5, but not nearly as good as 4 (through which I found 42 minutes worth of clips I liked). But hey, I'm only one person, and of course my tastes don't reflect anyone else's.

Also, as a die hard fan of Angel Beats, I felt "Golden Rule" was ****ing hilarious. To each their own.

No. Not this bull**** again. I have said enough on this. AMV Hell is not some cooshy classroom project. It's a movie that a lot of people watch and it (at least at one time was) held in high regard. I am sick and tired of this "Everything I made was **** but I sorta tried so that excuses me". It's this "At least you tried" and "Good enough" attitude that lead to all of these bull**** horrible clips to be in here. Ya know what, if your clip sucks, you don't get credit for trying. It sucks, now go out and make a better clips. Stop being satisfied with stuff that is just "Ok" or "Not terrible", push yourself to make something good goddamit!

Oh, and as for I have to give the producers credit for trying? And Who am I to complain?

Look son, ya know what, we are the ones providing the entertainment. We are the one's who made the clips and sent them in. No one here sat idly by and watched this get made. We all worked on our clips and submitted them. Therefore, we have the right to complain when the final product comes out as bad as it does.

1) This is, seriously, not that extreme.
2) Everyone will have something they like and something they don't like. But blaming the producers for personal taste doesn't really amount to more than "Everyone's a Critic." Even with its flaws, I'm glad 6 was released and if it were me, I'd eliminate the absolute ****tiest clips, release this as a 45 minute version of 6, and release 6.66 with 99% new clips as a 30 minute Director's Cut. That's just me; everyone has their own way of doing it.

Sure, it's not that extreme, but not screwing this sort of thing up isn't that hard either. I see where you're coming from, but I still have to disagree, to some extent. Sure, my comparison was ridiculously over the top, but that's about all I could get from your semi-vague post.

I'm not particularly arguing about comedy at this point. Rather, I'm arguing about basic stuff such as video quality. That's essentially impossible to screw up at this point. While I acknowledge humor as being subjective, video editing is a bit more concrete.

Again, there is a bit of subjectivity in regards to what is "good." From a presentation standpoint, many of the clips were of satisfactory quality for the high regard you've tried to achieve. It's the content that people are finding fault in, and that's what I'm trying to get at. I leafed through nine pages of this thread and gave up because a good 75% of the complaints were about jokes the people personally didn't find funny, as if that means it's bad all around.

I understand I'm an outsider because I am not a producer; however I have watched 3, 4, 5, CE, the Minis, and 6. There were clips I hated that I just know everyone else would call me crazy for hating. And that's why I'm being a devil's advocate here. My words probably mean nothing, but I just wanted to throw that out there. Whatever happens, I still have the draft version with all the clips I personally liked, therefore I'm happy.

That I do agree with you on. There were clips I could tell had been captured in 360p and lower and that is unacceptable. On the other hand, shows in 4:3 are a little more difficult to work with because you either need to crop or stretch and that will degrade video quality 9 times out of 10. Still, people did a good job despite those constraints.

No. No a 10000 times over. Almost none of the clips in here were of a satisfactory standpoint as far as presentation. They looked like ****. They did, don't anyone here dare try to tell me they didn't. WMM, encoding errors, pixels on the screen, presentation problems everywhere.

I leafed through nine pages of this thread and gave up because a good 75% of the complaints were about jokes the people personally didn't find funny, as if that means it's bad all around.

However there were a lot of the clips in there, that were indeed, bad all around. Look I'll agree that there is a certain level of subjectivity to these, but that's it. You can judge a lot of these by how well they were made, and how well they were made entirely effects how funny they are. A ton of the videos in this AMV compilation were not made well at all, they were poorly edited pieces of garbage, with bad video quality and weak punchline. They did not look good and they were not funny. We complain about presentation because it affects the joke so much, and it affects the entire movie so much.

You can find HD footage of almost every single show in existence at this point, very easily on the web. There is no excuse for 360p on older shows, and no excuse for ever 480p on new shows. None.

Since when do you need to crop 4:3 for any reason other than mixing aspect ratios in a multi-anime clip? Also, stretching 4:3 footage is a lot worse than pillarboxing, in my opinion. It's not like you can't get 4:3 480p.

To make it 16:9 for consistency's sake, which is what a lot of newer clips are leaning toward. As for re-releases of old anime, that will help immensely in the future and I wasn't aware that was going on, so that was a foul on my end.

There's literally no point in cropping a 4:3 clip to 16:9 if you're just doing it for "consistency." Of course it will look bad then because you just technically reduced it to 360p. For reference, that's like chopping off some parts of a puzzle piece just so it'll fit on a certain part of a board it was never meant to be in. I know it's probably a matter of taste, but leaving an aspect ratio how it's supposed to be seems like the correct option to me. If the black bars on the side of the screen mean that I'm seeing all that was intended to be seen, then so be it. As for those Blu-Rays, it seems that most of them are 960x720, so Japan apparently doesn't like cropping either, for whatever that piece of info is worth.

HumanKnotGirl, your complacency and willingness to look the other way in regards to this video's shortcomings is exactly why the bar has fallen so low to the point that this rough cut of 6 has even seen the light of day. I actually feel ashamed when watching it as i can't tell the difference between that and the **** you see uploaded by the children on youtube on a daily basis...just in a hour plus long painful experience.

Not denying SSG's involvement as his cryptic complaints about quality and refusing to elaborate/work with us while instead opting to talk to himself on the forum didn't help also."Rough cut" is PR BS for "Save this piece of **** before it's too late." Though in hindsight, i do think zarx made the right move here as seeing is better than believing and some of you niggas needed a serious reality check/fire lit under your asses. In that case, I am going to present a third option. Let's go out on a limb and say that Zarx firing SSG does nothing to increase the quality of AMVH6, because of the biases that started during the development of the Minis. The "looking the other way" that you refer to. Let's say that trend continues with with SSG gone. If that's the case, then the fault is equally on Zarx.

If that's the case, then what a lot of you could do (and likely will out of sheer frustration) is either mutiny (and create your own version of AMV Hell with an entirely new name and stricter submission guidelines) while Zarxrax continues to make the compilations he prefers. Or, mutiny and ask Zarxrax to pass the torch to somebody else at the discretion of the community. I mean no offense in pointing this out; he's done an amazing job in my opinion but it looks like things are going downhill and fresh eyes might be the solution here.

Unnecessary. Zarx obviously knows that this is **** or else he would just have released it as AMVH6, period. If he ****s up on the salvaging then I would think just getting a few editors and making our own project would be best, although it wouldnt have the same impact as an official "Hell"

When zarx actually comes to play he's an amazing editor with strict quality control and from what i've seen of his judging so far he's on top of salvaging this garbage. He instructed me on fixing technical issues with my submissions that i didn't catch for one and it's also a good sign that the "judges" from minis aren't on this.

Christ, look who's butthurt. I figured that, since this is a discussion thread, it meant the topic (AMV Hell 6) was open to discussion. Discussion implies different perspectives on the same topic. Yes, I have a more idealistic/optimistic view of the work itself; I wasn't aware that was a bad thing. If it offends you that much, maybe you're just a bitter person.

As for my idea of changing who oversees the project, I presented it because all options should be on the table if people are unsatisfied with the overall work (as they are now). I don't see how that's hindering anybody's work. Get your head out of your ass, for ****'s sake.

I am kinda of surprised at how word for word what you guys are saying, is just what I said in that "Thanks for AMV Hell 6" thread, makes me feel that I am not misguided.

Knotgirl right now you are the personifaction of the mentality that is threatening the much loved AMV Hell name. Be they your honest thoughts or as you said yourself "Devils Advocate" they are not accepting it from anyone. You are right in the middle of people who take pride in quality of work, strive to make sure things are just so and your telling them not too.

You only get the same amount of quality out, as effort you put into it.

They are putting their names down next to clips that dont past muster, it drags down the quality of their own efforts. Mattroks and Haar put great effort into their clips, which after a second veiwing of Amv Hell 6 I judged their clips too harshly as I wasnt in the mood from alot of poor clips. They have plenty of great clips from past AMV Hells and Mini.

So they are takeing it personal and as a matter of pride since they seem to be the only people too along with he others here. AMV Hell is a big project, these guys cant do it by themselves, however I dont think it would stop them from trying.

Playing Devils Advocate or voiceing your own opinions that are the opposite the call for higher standards, is counter productive as the impresonable people who already think their bad clips are acceptable will see your opinion and think "I am not wrong." fueling bad quality.

They are takeing a stand and stamping out this terrible middle ground thinking.

Sadly Knotgirl you are the head on a pike, outside the castle walls to warn others its not ok.

A certain degree of subtlety is needed here. A hooligan does not bring a tactical nuke to a back alley fistfight with some out of town kids, lest they want to blow everything up, leaving nothing of the original intent of things.

I'm probably never going to completely abandon this, no matter how hairy things get, and I don't think Zarx should pass the torch to someone else. I still view AMV Hell as his series, no matter what, and I'm even a little wary of when SSG directs. I mean, we've seen both here and in the past what happens when he gets behind the wheel of this ship. Not saying Zarx is perfect, of course, but rather that I think he generally does a better job of keeping things straight when he sets his mind to it.

To be fair, I've halfassed a lot of clips in this one. My skills weren't exactly as polished then as they are now, and I think it shows, particularly in my Konami Code/Yugioh clip, given the mediocre audio quality and the somewhat low video quality.

AMV Hell is a big project, these guys cant do it by themselves, however I dont think it would stop them from trying.

Well, he and I did make a video together, but that was only like 17 minutes, took a year to make, and wasn't really on the level of humor of quality of the good AMV Hell movies.

Given the impeccabre Amelican Engrish I see on some signs from over there, coupled with the grammar and spelling of the typical Kamen Rider actor, particularly those in Kabuto and Fourze, this should not surprise me at all, though it still does, for some reason.

I dunno about Haar's, but my clips were terrible in the original AMV Hell 6. They should not have gotten in. They dragged the whole thing down even lower. I dunno what I was thinking when I came up with either of those, but both of them needed a lot more effort than I gave them. Fortunately enough, that was back in May, or June. I am no longer the lazy bastard I once was and I actually try to be good now. I'm not perfect, I still have a long ways to go before I become great, or moderately great, but I've set a much higher standard for myself than I once did. "Good enough" is no longer good enough for me. It's got to be better.

EDIT: A thing I think that most seem to be forgetting here is that after this AMV Hell, it's over. The minis is over and Zarx only seems to be doing this because SSG ****ed it up so badly. I'm not sure what will happen when this movie comes out, but even if this is the last AMV Hell, I want it to the best one there is. I don't want some halfassed AMV Hell 6 that people remember for how bad it was.

Literally all of the things people are saying make this rough cut the greatest disgrace to AMV hell were true of AMV Hell 3. The bad image quality, the lame jokes, the absence of jokes, the frequency of clips that were just random animes set to music.

Yeah, I think that AMV Hell 4 is better than 3 anyway. Not perfect, of course, and it was the progenitor that lead to the rise of the sort of crap we see today, but I think it flowed a little better. More on this in a second.

Literally all of the things people are saying make this rough cut the greatest disgrace to AMV hell were true of AMV Hell 3. The bad image quality, the lame jokes, the absence of jokes, the frequency of clips that were just random animes set to music.
Now, the latter 3 I won't argue about, due to my previous statement, but the first one is the issue. Now, AMV Hell 3 came out back in 2005. Keep in mind that at that time, most fansubbers did pretty bad jobs of encoding and used either the realmedia codec or some outdated form of divx. At that point, you actually had to buy DVDs or else you'd be faced with terrible footage. Also at that time, DVD ripping was a bit trickier. If you wanted it to be done right, you had to boot up AVISynth, make an AVS script, put in some code, and put your footage through a lot of cleaning. Most importantly, rather than being exported as an x264 encoded mp4, AMV Hell 3 was released as an Xvid encoded avi file. To put it simply, it's a video from 7 years ago, back when the game was different, with other hosting methods being more popular and encoding being a different animal.

Nowadays, ripping DVDs is a lot simpler and poseurs can just use some quick filters in Sony Vegas to make their DVDs look better without bothering with AVISynth or any of that other stuff. Not to mention that most of these people aren't even buying their stuff and raws or soft-subtitled fansubs of pretty much every show are available now. The excuses that flew in 2005 are no longer valid today.

Now I'm not saying there isn't cause for improvement here. After all you don't want your newest work to be as bad as your first attempt, but lets keep things in perspective a little.

I'll say that Hell 3 was good for its time. Again, this was still technically the dial-up age where AMVs were hard to find and you had to jump through a bunch of hoops just to see Japanese cartoons set to music. In this day and age, you can just whip out a phone and see a billion videos of Linkin Park songs set to Naruto. The "magic" of seeing videos at conventions or hooking up your modem to go to the sites of various editors is gone now and you have to step your game up to catch the interest of people.

Anyway, this guy (http://theangryotaku.blogspot.com/2011/07/video-killed-video-star-anime-music.html) puts it a bit better than I did, so read what he said if you have the time.

Going to have to ask for examples on this one. And I mean many examples, not just the 1 or 2 that weren't funny or using poor sources.

Yeah, I think that AMV Hell 4 is better than 3 anyway. Not perfect, of course, and it was the progenitor that lead to the rise of the sort of crap we see today, but I think it flowed a little better. More on this in a second.

I'll say that Hell 3 was good for its time. Again, this was still technically the dial-up age where AMVs were hard to find and you had to jump through a bunch of hoops just to see Japanese cartoons set to music. Sure I'll agree that it was a product of it's time. I started reading over the blog post and I think it's indicative of the mentality I disagree with here. The way he claims "AMVs used to be like hotrods" is where he lost me and the way he elaborates suggests to me what he misses is the nostalgia of how special an AMV used to feel rather then any claims to real artistic superiority.

Sure there's a lot more crap out there, but there's also a lot more talent out there. The key is to find a way to filter out the crap. If AMV Hell means to continue, I recommend end the submission guidelines post with "And the first ten seconds must be a black screen with the words '100 Brown M&Ms". That way you know who read the submission guidelines and you can reject those who don't without even bothering to watch their videos.

I mostly just remember that there were only a handful of clips which I really liked and felt were funny. When a clip is not funny and doesn't catch my attention I tend to forget about it. It also helped that I was there with a friend who had never seen an AMV Hell and therefore had no nostalgia bias. He laughed at maybe three clips and eventually we just shut it off. So ok, the first hour of AMV Hell 3 is as bad as the 6 rough cut IMO, maybe it really picks up in the last 30 minutes.

Off the top of my head the only good ones that come to mind are:
-Bodyguard song to DBZ
-Disco Inferno to Grave of the Fire Flys
-Carmen San Diego to Hellsing

Also off the top of my head the Azimangadia McDonalds girl one was a complete waste of space. Not funny or well made, that one doesn't even get the excuse that it was a long time ago because it's not even edited anime footage it's a custom animation. I watched tons of flash animations back in 2005 and people could do a lot better then that.

Also while both hand jive and macarena were ok by themselves, putting both in the same video was way to repetitive.

I get what you're saying, and I certainly see how that applies to AMVs in general and the message that The Angry Otaku was going for, but I wouldn't exactly call what we do here "art," after all. I mean, sure it requires some artistic input, though there's a bit of a science to it as well, most of the footage is already there for you to work with, and most of this stuff isn't exactly classy like "traditional" art. Let's look at AMV Hell 0. The dissonance of values aside, can we really call something like that art? It was funny, if not a little repetitive, but it was vulgar, crude, and, frankly, full of drivel. I thought we were all here to have a laugh. Now, I get that some try to do serious AMVs for other projects, but in the case of AMV Hell, I don't think that comparison to art applies as easily.

Now, that could work, but it might also backfire. A fairly good editor could've accidentally missed that part, assuming that they submission guidelines weren't changed at all from the last time, thus leading to something accidentally getting sent to the crap folder. Now, if it were up to me, the message added would be "For the love of all that is good, if you're going to steal your footage, at least have the brains to use google and find the highest quality version available, rather than from some YouTube video uploaded in 2006, and if you don't listen, we'll reject your video." If that were the case, then maybe we would actually get some things done here. I mean, the guides already say not to send in videos made with that that sort of footage, but stuff always manages to slip through the cracks despite this, due to the want of the people for quick releases.

tl;dr

Corner cutting is still quite prevalent on here, so those types of things won't work so well.

I'd say AMV Hell is definitely art, but it's not necessarily good art or "high' art. You can still use the same standards to judge it, rhythm, pacing, aesthetics, originality, comedic timing. These can all be applied.

As for the 100 brown M&Ms, on the first line, say very clearly "If you want any chance of being accepted read this entire page very carefully". I doubt there will be a high frequency of great editors overlooking a detail like that, after all a big part of editing is an eye for detail. If we lose a few good or even "ok" editors, no big loss. Instead of flat out ignoring videos that fail the test maybe send them a reply that says "please re-read the submission guidelines for consideration"

You have a point about returning editors though. Maybe they should get some lenience.

It might be worth emphasizing quality of idea over quality of video (not to the extreme of course).

Maybe before a video is even considered people should have to pitch the idea. That way they wont waste time making a crap video and the mods wont waste time watching it.

Good judges are hard to come by. The few that we had for Minis other than Zarx seemed to have no clue what they were doing, for the most part. For all intents and purposes, they never bothered bringing up any technical stuff, and one of them usually had nothing of value to add beyond a single sentence that encompassed his opinion, yet these people still thought they were doing a great job.

As I've said before, he's just a man like all of us, rather than some godlike being capable of no errors, so I'm not expecting him to ride a chariot through space and blow up asteroids with his mind to save the world. For the most part, he knows what he's talking about and at the very least, we can't say he doesn't know of technical quality, since he worked on the definitive guide (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech31/). Simply put, humor may be subjective, but a lot of this stuff is pretty set in stone.

Keep in mind that SSG was the director of AMV Hell 6. Anyway, we all get stuff rejected at some point, and we can't expect Zarx to find everything we do as hilarious. There are a few clips I made that I thought were pretty funny that still didn't get in, but I didn't get all that disheartened over their rejection.

Perhaps poor reveiwing just annoys the hell out of me.
clips should be judged for there quality
in video
audio
and if it's got good syncrinization

not if the judging party finds it funny or not.

also I don't think to highly of my videos I think that most of the time there of an average stadard and I have a lot to learn before they can be considered great, but since the quality in 6 seemed to be of an average standard and nothing realy special I thought I'd give it ago at subbmitting.

now if Zarxs had mentioned the audio, video quality or had mentioned there was a timing issue with the audio sync wit h the video footage and my clip had been rejected for one those I could go back and try and sort it.

but saying he didn't find it funny is just his own personal opinion which just isn't helpful in these situations.

Haar

Despite my constant talk of technical quality, I still think that humor is just as important. I merely think that it's easier to explain this stuff that can be broken down to a science to people than it is to debate about humor with them. I mean, even if a video is well edited, it can still be boring. Now, in a perfect situation where there are a bunch of submissions, we can start cutting the unfunny, but well edited ones, but those situations never happen so a bit of selectivity is required.

Oh, I forgot something. I might as well post an example of why judging on editing, audio, and video quality alone is a bad idea, via something I slapped together a few minutes ago..

Editing done in Sony Vegas Pro 10, encoded with Zarx264Gui, video taken from 1280x720 Blu-Ray source, audio taken from 192kbps CD source. So, at the very least, the following is technically superior when compared to some of the things let into AMV Hell 6, correct? But is it actually funny, entertaining, or original?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_6CaJ51aSU

So yeah, at the very least, your video should look good, but put some effort into actually making it humorous or at least somewhat interesting. Otherwise, it'll end up being boring and forgettable.

That's kind of what I was going for, albeit in a subtle manner, when I brought up the thing about originality, et cetera, et cetera.

Also, for the record, I put no effort into that video beyond acquiring sources and cutting scenes up. All of what appeared to be added effects were just organic scenes from the show's opening.

I personaly don't think that funny should be a requirement for the amvs.
as ong as there good quality and interesting and origional the comedy aspect shouldn't matter because as mentioned before humour is subjective and that is why I find it annoying when my videos are rejected on this basis.

I didn't find it funny.
I know I'm just repeating my self.
but it seems that people are missing my point and I'm sure the video Harr posted was a jab at me.
You hey look at this my videos got awsome video and audio but the context is utter crap,I guess this what you want more of in the amvhells.

I'm going to clarify my opinion on this.
videos shouldn't need to be funny as humour is subjective and is different for everyone
it should be of a good quality (video and audio) - but realy that goes with out saying.
it should try and be origional - not overally important as nearly every idea has been done in some context.
it should be easy to understand.

well thats my opinion on it.

Sounds like there's some butthurt going on in here, I'm sure you are not the only one who has had a video rejected for 6. Humor is an opinion but there are some who also lack it. Now as the requirement of a amv being funny, I believe AMV Hell was built on the idea of being funny because they were not the norm of a plain amv, which I believe the norm was anime and music. If AMV Hell was not meant to be odd or funny then why are we here, and why did everyone want to clone it. If we want normal amv's then we should all just hang out at animemusicvideos.org, and there is a comedy category over there.

To be fair, I've halfassed a lot of clips in this one. My skills weren't exactly as polished then as they are now, and I think it shows, particularly in my Konami Code/Yugioh clip, given the mediocre audio quality and the somewhat low video quality.

Well, he and I did make a video together, but that was only like 17 minutes, took a year to make, and wasn't really on the level of humor of quality of the good AMV Hell movies.

I know they were half assed...compared to alot more around them they look like great effort and both of yous have better jokes. The work of some like two other editors was great, mainly the guy that spliced Mononoke and that Snickers song with Beck?, as well as a good sense of on comedy timing.

Also Haar...I said try. I never said succeed. I would take a video of all your half assed and burnt out ideas throw into 60 minutes than over half of what was in this. I am sure even in a sleep deprived state you could tell when things run on too long.

I don't want some half assed AMV Hell 6 that people remember for how bad it was.

Yeah in two months time, it will be about a year since submissions opened. Alot can change in that time, however see my comment on Haar about you are both still better than most in the video, and hope to see better.

Yes Mattroks. I too see that unless AMV hell 6 is still considered not good enough for a proper release. Then AMV Hell will have a bullet put through its head after release and thus shall end a chapter. I dont know about Mini's as its not as esteemed or as effort filled I would imagine, Mini's could go down the toilet and people would still enjoy it E.G people saying "AMV Hell 6 was hilarious! What are you talking about?!".

I was flicking through old AMV hell 6 threads to get a sense of the history. Granted with SSG behind the wheel its not documented in detail. However this quote I think sums up the constant flags SSG put up.

Accurate representation of the image quality of the average AMV Hell 6 video submission:
http://i.minus.com/iboXncKIq8kbRa.gif

The writing has been on the wall for a long time. I agree with you Matrroks, SSG is beaten and I dont see him having any enthusiasm for this again., the community doesn't seem to exist even as close to what it was for AMV Hell 5.

I have went back to AMV Hell 3, 4 and 5, judging them clip by clip'ish, alot of things I condemned "HUMOR" wise is all there, however they are not the entire thing, there is alot of variance and overall done better. What I see in AMV Hell 6 is alot of people who just watched AMV Hell 3,4,5 and Mini's and said "Hey that clip got in! Ill remake it!".

Its more obvious watching AMV paradise that people think like that. The amount of Cowboy Bebop clips of Juliette? getting shot. I rolled my eyes back when it was only three clips in AMV Hell, Genowned is timeless and will never get boring to me.

I think AMV since AMV Hell 3 its became an influx of "posers" people copying and not creating.

Alot of people seemed to end up using the same moments in the same anime. Like they were call collecting from the same pool E.G Iron Editor. Except...they have infinite resources to choose from, yet we end up with crazy train out of no were alot, and the same fight secenes from Darrara and Baccano, (to be fair I am just guessing the anime's as I dont much new anime untill their five years old, lets the true gems sift out of the ****.)

I agree AMV Hell needs to die with a little dignity, if people can get it on par with 5 great, exceed awesome. Lets not leave in the gutter. Aswell as pray we have a renaissance.

Now as the requirement of a amv being funny, I believe AMV Hell was built on the idea of being funny because they were not the norm of a plain amv, which I believe the norm was anime and music.

To me since 2002 AMV meant comedy in some aspect(E.G 99 Red Balloons to End of EVA fight, while Love Hina: Horoscope for today which is just comedy) put together well. Since 2006 with Youtube AMV now meant Anime Music Video, people took the literal and the easiest route, thus Naruto and Linkin park are mates for life.

I dont considered what is called a Normal AMV, Normal...old values I suppose.

Its not about AMV Hell 6 any more, Its not about individual clips, its getting to not even be about AMV's! Its about people complete and utter disregard of quality and there complacency to accept less in this world of "Its not about the winning, its the taking part!".

We want to beat this thinking out of people.

AMV Hell is going to die, and it looks like the old values of AMV's are going to die with it.

I am a 24 year old from Scotland, I watched anime like Cyber City Oedo 808, 3x3 eyes and Legend of the four kings when I was 4, I saw 300 animes comes 2002. I was 13, I also got the internet. Amv's trickled about and could spend hours downloading 50mb video from things like Kazaa. I loved those AMV's, still do.

I have only been to one Con and at that was London MCM Expo 2011. I have only soaked up AMV's and Con's through the internet. I have never been to any AMV forum like this, or edited my own AMV. YET EVEN I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING IN THAT ARTICLE!!

You can't force people to make a better product, no more than I can force people to not like Twilight.

All you can do, is keep making your work with a higher level of quality, and hope it inspires others to do better.
I'm not even sure how many people who submitted videos actually frequent this forum.

Just let them grow out of it on their own.

Hi peoples of the amvhell community.
I'd just like to appollogoize again for a dunmbass I was just having one of my moments.

I understand that amvhells are meant to be funny(sadly the truth is there normaly not)
unless I'm just not understanding the comedy value of some of the clips and I don't just mean in 6 I mean in all of them.

I know Zarxs went to improve 6 or he woudn't be doing this,So I'll move on and try with a new skit.

incorrect,
weather people like it or not they recieve feedback, negative feedback increases the need for improovement, positive feedback icreases the need for more videos, no feedback icreases the feeling that no one gives a **** about you and you should prolly do something else.

this is the interaction between the creator and the consumer in a white on black view, in what manner you provide feedback is another story.
the only problem is that there arent enouth people who would use it properly.

Another submission submitted.

Jinzo. It's understandable. I think you may be like me and others here in that you are a fan of your own work.
Nothing wrong with that, but we do set ourselves up to be bristled when our work is criticised, or rejected.
A case in point would be this clip (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/56054393/XX%20AMV%20MINI%20UPLOADS%20XX/past%20AMV%20entries/FMA%20AMV%20MIN%20I.mp4) that I originally
submitted to SSG. I always thought that it was brilliant (imo) and when it didn't make it in the first time, but 2 very similar clips did, I was pissed. I resubmitted it and bitched that I thought I was
somehow ripped off. After all mine was "brilliant" and the other 2 weren't (because they weren't mine). It is on the "maybe" list, but I doubt that it will be in the final cut. The reason? It really isn't as funny as the other 2. After I calmed down, I loaded up all three clips and watched them together. Being more objective this time, I noticed that my "Brilliant" clip was pretty slow in comparison.

I still love my clip, and sometime I'll find something else for it to do. In the mean time all I can do is move on and try something else - which is what you said you would do as well (good idea).

I may be able to give you a little insight on what (I believe) Zarx's taste on clips is. In short: Set up, Deliver, Move on. He seems to prefer the fast joke, so try to avoid anything that takes up space
in your clips that doesn't contribute to the joke you're trying to present. As a rule, the closer you are to the :30 mark, the less likely that it will be accepted as-is (if at all).
Another personal example of this would be this clip (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/56054393/XX%20AMV%20MINI%20UPLOADS%20XX/past%20AMV%20entries/GYH-new%202.mp4) from the last episode of Season 2. It's only 8 seconds long and the original "story" that I had in mind is gone. This (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/56054393/XX%20AMV%20MINI%20UPLOADS%20XX/past%20AMV%20entries/GIVE%20YOUR%20HAND.mp4) is the original :30 clip. (I was using Pinnacle in when it was made, so the video quality isn't as good)

I prefer the Black knight clip you posted here over the dbz one that made.
i'm personaly not keen on either of the elfen lied clips the long version is slow and the audio is abit quiet in parts.
the short gets straight to the punch line with there being any build up for it.
but i'm happy for you that some off your clips are making it in.

I've made shorter clips in the past for minis that have been rejected for being to short or stating the obvious.
Sadly looking back at one of them it has the cartoon network logo on it so it should have been rejected on that detail not that it was short,or lacking any joke.
But the whole clip in itself is the joke.

I see where you were going with that one. Getting rid of watermarks can be as easy as zooming in and framing the shot differently.
As for it being too short, it is. The audio, to me, sounds clipped - as though he is supposed to be saying "Nevermore" but with the 'n' missing.
('Nevermore' is what the raven says in E.A.P.'s poem). The whole thing would be lost with the white noise transition on either side of your audio.
Assuming that you're editing at 24 fps, I would allow about 10-12 frames on each side for the TV screen transition to run its course.
The last thing that it could use would be a nice slamming door sound when the door closes.

That's my opinion on that. Which as I always say, my opinion and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee at McDonald's. =)

If we're talking about freeware editing programs, people should try Wax. It's a bit more complex than Windows Movie Maker, rendering option-wise, but the interface should be simple to figure out.

On that note, you CAN do good work with Windows Movie Maker, but it's not very easy to do so, and it's hardly worth it. That is to say, from what I recall, you're given very few options for how to render your video (either that or most people that use it are too inept to use anything besides the default render), you can't really do frame accurate cuts very easily, and you aren't given many options for effects or even doing proper lip-flaps.

I'm getting a little sidetracked. I still have a few clips I should scrub for the final cut. Not to mention the new ideas I still have to bring life to.

Also, going by what Zarx said, I'm assuming the average submission is 15 seconds, and thus around 50 minutes worth of content was sent in. So yeah, 70% of the entries were probably bad, if my estimation is right.

gee, no one sugested that before

There used to be a pitch stage where people posted their ideas before being allowed to make them or post the video for consideration?

Good judges are hard to come by. The few that we had for Minis other than Zarx seemed to have no clue what they were doing, for the most part. For all intents and purposes, they never bothered bringing up any technical stuff, and one of them usually had nothing of value to add beyond a single sentence that encompassed his opinion, yet these people still thought they were doing a great job.

But if their only job was to vote funny premise vs not funny premise based on a logline technical stuff wouldn't be an issue.

Why not test the idea out, here's some premises I've thought up in the past but never made. I've left in ideas which I've decided aren't even good ones:

-Nom nom nom song to blue Gender

-Oops I farted again to the scene of the blue taking off in blue gender

-Extraneous lyrics or 32 songs in 8 minutes to Sempi from Macross playing guitar

-FLCL Date Rape song

-Red Eye footage from Cowboy Beebop set to Alabama liquid snake from Metalocalpyse

-cowboy bebop "they're breakdance fighting"

-Alphonse as bender

-greed = venom from hishe using the "This way I get more face time" line.

-The trial from "Dead Man Wonderland" edited so Ganta is giving "Charlie Manson's Epic Answer". Possibly end with the scene of him getting beat up.

-"anything can happen when two people share a cell cuz" from Arrested Development set to Dead Man Wonderland

Glycerine "you've got a beautiful taste" to Hellsing

Major Lewis armstrong as Johnny Bravo (this one's purely academic since there's already a Johnny Bravo clip in 6 and people generally seemed to approve)

Trigun making that weird harelip looking face set to the line "hey harelip jim ever think of growing a mustache?" from Family Guy

Get better judges? Or it could be its own sub forum. It could be a very specific process eg, you have to submit a poll then need more people to vote funny vs not funny and only then can you make an entry. Or it could be more informal, you have to post an idea period and wait at least a week before you can submit. Negative feedback alone should deter people from wasting their time on a video no one will find funny.

Whelp, I'm back. Just wanted to bring up a few stray thoughts of mine without wasting forum space:

- I'm watching AMV Hell 4, and I do see what you guys are referring to as far as quality goes. I remember this came out back when I was an underclassman in high school. Even then, the quality was pretty good, especially in comparison to some of the Hell 6 rough cut clips. That said, I still stick to my guns on the point that mileage does very, even with low quality/**** tier clips. I mean, take into account the other AMVX's on the web: Nightmare, Insomnia, Yume. From a visual standpoint they can be pretty ****ing terrible, but they still have plenty of hilarious jokes. And for the record, "Golden Rule" was one of my favorite clips in the 6 Draft, as much as 97% of you guys hated it.

- This is totally unrelated, and no longer an issue as of the minis, but I am curious from the standpoint of experienced editors. If there were a great many clips that were already 16:9, why wasn't AMV Hell 4 (and AMV Hell 5 for that matter) encoded in a 16:9 aspect ratio?

And with that, shutting up again. Gentlemen.

There's nothing to be gained by scaling a 4:3 source to 16:9. All it does it weaken the visual quality. The only time it's really acceptable is if you want it to look like it's all coming from the same show. In a collection of short videos like this one, every clip should just be viewed the way it was intended to be viewed.

I think he meant why didn't they add black bars to the 4:3 clips instead of sizing down the 16:9 clips and adding bars to them. And I have no idea why they did that, seeing as the 4:3 would be the same size either way.

I'm coming in very late; is there any value in further feedback or has everything already been said?

In (very) short:

Many clips were overlong. Not bad clips, but in need of pruning, both for comic timing and so if the viewer doesn't get the material that it doesn't become boring or annoying. If it's a really good clip for certain audiences but just long, make it a traditional AMV (yes! they exist!). For instance, one of my favorites was the Carnival Phantasm/Hercules clip - except it's quite long and depends heavily on the viewer realizing that hulking behemoth on screen is Hercules (okay, summoned into Berserker, but again that's up to viewer knowledge). I get that and it makes it hilarious, but I also see that falling really flat if you're missing the reference.
The quality concerns appear to have been discussed to death, just from the last couple pages of posts. I'll assume anything that needed to be said has been said.

I'll post some of my favorites, just because no one tends to object to positive feedback.

?/Anatomy - Excellent send up of anime anatomy.
Code Geass/Go Crazy - Good take on a classic.
?/A-Team - Great take on the "build an unlikely contraption to save the day"
Several/1812 Overture - Truly excellent, wish I had a standalone of this (I was really expecting Homura's "overkill" scene; surprised it wasn't there).
Tengen Toppa/Until We Meet Again - Awesome - to the point and fits the material. Honestly too good for the rest of the video.
Tengen Toppa/Kiss Him Goodbye - Awesome - to the point and fits the material.
Bleach/Monty Python - Great combo, no knowledge of anime necessary.
Madoka/Wilkomen - Interesting, and very well done.
Toradora/Eye of the Tiger - While it's been done before, it was very well done here.
Haruhi/Every Day is Exactly the Same - Managed to make crap material into a good AMV. Nicely done!
Nichijou/Jerry Springer - Awesome. That is all.
Tengen Toppa/Bad Moon on the Rise - Excellent, fits the original material.
?/You've Got The Touch - Wasn't expecting much (Eva was a good fit before), but damn that was funny!
HOTD/Zombieland - Well done, nice editing of "The Rules" into the video.
Nichijou/Get Ready to Die - Awesome. Period.
Ouran Host Club/Chef - Awesome combo of character and voice.
Thundercats/Lady and the Tramp "Siamese" - Excellent brevity.

Mattroks (If not someone else I perused upon) I think experimented with seeing how many variations of that scene he could do (they were pretty good...except to an overused scene.) and see how many got into AMV Hell. I think all of them were shot down if not nearly all.

After watching Paradise, I started thinking that people sometimes just cut the AMV Hell clips as a source and put their own audio over the most used ones.

I donno Id already vote its overused and that is just from AMV Hell 6, that song has been around for five years now hardly new, Sword Art Online being the only new thing in that sentence.

However bike scene from Girl who leapt through time and Julia's death from Cowboy Bebop certainly are overused and should be banned.

Sir Fluffykins

I think in the rejects for AMV HELL 3 there was a clip from the Animatrix of a guy running, same scene over and over to different audio which I thought was great.

I wouldn't mind repeat scene jokes if they were done like that, all in one go, either in a clump together or spread out over the whole video. But Girl Who Leapt Through Time bike scene and Julia's death (still haven't seen Beebop series) have been murdered.

^"Do you want to date my avatar" is a terrible song to begin with, it's too slow to be used as a repeat joke, why can't people use parody songs like the role-play better song "Hey, Dude" (Parody of Hey, Jude)

Then again, parody songs frequently suffer from being lower quality than original songs. But point readily taken about the slowness of "Date My Avatar" - it does mean any vaguely sensible clip has to be a minimum length, which violates my own preference for short to-the-point clips. Gomen.

At least, there was no haruhi concert skit in the rough cut, thanks god.

(But in the end, if the skit is cool, it's not really important if the scene is overused or not. I really loved the Makoto one with Bike of Pink Floyd.)
(But ok, it wasn't as cool as the "Don't Stop Believing" one.)

Akyho
01-09-2013, 01:57 PM
While Hauhi Concert skits are overused, the ones that got into AMV Hells have some editing skill use. They are cloning frames, syncing very precisely and doing what ever for the mouth, be it abridged style of overlapping mouths and then fiddling with frames or brute forcing it with frames.

To get the speed, precision and syncing to make it look as if it was animated like that. They spent a while doing that.

Vs

Girl who leapt through time bike clip with Pink Floyd: Bike or any song for that matter involving a bike. Usually just slapped over the top of the scene. That clip had some syncing with looking at the handles and pedals, however Haar has already demonstrated such things can just be organic and not at all skilled.

Id take a well done Haruhi concert clip over another Girl Who leapt through time bike and train clip. Unless it actually had some great joke in it.

Id much rather get trolled with that scene, have the bike scene, everyone rolls their eyes and then when the train hits it becomes crazy train and with skill we slip into some perfect train clip.
Its a double whammy of overused stuff and an unexpected delivery. I am not saying this ideas good, however I will say its better.

Somehow get a double joke in there, just like AMV Hell 3 did all the time. There was two jokes in most clips.

The main problem with overused clips is they lose their impact. The first time I saw the bike scene, I hadnt scene GHLTT and it was a sudden shock of "OH!" and then the laughter of it all coming together. Turns out it wasnt as horrific as I first thought after watching GHLTT.

Hell even overuse of an anime can get bad. Elfen Lied clip pops up you already know what is going to happen, except its up to the editor to make it different.

However when you come to the next clip you know what's going to happen, its not as strong the more it is used it becomes a bore. Aswell as its slacking and lazy to use such scenes.

I know this is cheeky coming from a none editor. There is a huge pool of stuff that isnt already done to death or haven't even been done at all.

Getting to a point you'd be just as well cutting up old AMVs and just changing audio as apparently people don't care for quality or originality..

Getting to a point you'd be just as well cutting up old AMVs and just changing audio as apparently people don't care for quality or originality..

Well, originality isn't the same thing than quality. In this rough cut, we have some skits who are original but not good. And believe or not, the Pink Floyd one is not really original but it's good. I don't care to be surprised at all costs with all skits. I just want, in an AMV Hell, a thing that is enjoyable, technically good and who makes a good use of a song. This skit is short, sweet, with a good song (and, believe it or not, it helps), a good rythmn and a good cutting. It's watchable and enjoyable, and it don't hurt to have skit like that.

The one with Dog Days Are Over, in the other hand, isn't good. It's long, boring and not interesting. I really love the song but there was really no work by the author and it's not interesting. At least, there was a good use of the lyrics but if this one is not in the final cut, I will not miss it. Frankly, I want it to not being in the final cut.

A good clip is a good clip, that's all. I don't care if that good clip use a scene already seen in others AMV Hell because, in the end, two thousands skits will use other animes and other scenes. And the majority will be "fresh." It's the same thing with musics. Ok, in the AMV Minis there were a lot of Throw It To The Ground jokes and, yes, it was kind of boring. But the one in the AMV Hell 6 is good and don't bother me. Again, it's really short and it's fun so where is the problem ? Damn, it's maybe the best Throw It To The Ground skit of the history of AMV Hell / Minis :').

But, ok, if I see the same scene or hear the same music in the same AMV Hell more than one time and it's not an assumed running gag, well, I can begin to hate it. Wanna Date My Avatar in the rough cut, par exemple.

(and again, sorry for my english, it's not my birth langage so I feel kind of dumb when I try to write it ^^;.)

(and yay, 6 of my skits were accepted \o\.)
(and the ones who were "rejected" or "maybeised" all deserved it so I feel good about it. Zarzrax is a really good judge. I begin to feeling pretty excited by this final cut.)

I thought the rough draft was pretty funny. I didn't have high hopes for it so I was surprised and I was happy that a couple of mine made it in.

But there was one clip that, in my opinion, was horrible and that was the Madoka + GroundHog Day clip.

After having watched Madoka just recently I get the reference but having to watch up until the 10th episode of a not so mainstream series to get the joke is unacceptable. In other words; it's too obscure.

Haar

Isn't Madoka actually pretty popular now? It got licensed for North America and it seems to be the type of thing most anime fans eat up.

zemoo
01-13-2013, 12:26 AM
Madoka's pretty mainstream, and the opening clip, "Wanted: someone to go back in time with me" should clue you in to the premise of the show. As someone who until recently has not watched much anime I have a love-hate relationship with the clips that only make sense if you've seen the show. AMV hell 5 was my least favorite of the three "long" hells, partially due to how many clips were only funny if you had seen the show that I just don't get. Every time I re-watch 5, however, I'll have seen a few more series. Those clips that I didn't get before, but do now add so much re-watchability to 5. My evaluation of it is slowly creeping up because it always seems fresh. I know my situation is not common, and if 5 just had more good, universally understood clips in it from the beginning I would have just enjoyed it more on my first watch through, but it's at least something to think about.

I couldn't help but notice that in the ending credits at the line "six-o-clock, TV hour" the clip in the background was the groundhog day one, which conveniently had the clock at 6:00. I wonder, did SSG make that clip just so he could shoehorn it into the ending credits, and by extension have any clips ever been accepted so they could be used in the credits?

Why do so many clips in Hell 6 use cover versions of their songs, unless the cover has something that directly contributes to the clip the original is so much more familiar and should be strictly better. The ending (where the credits are supposed to be) even uses a cover, which to me seems suboptimal. It's a little awkward that a clip used the original version, but with repeated Monty Python audio I don't see why the credits can't have the full song as was featured in a clip. Also the subtitles to the credits were distracting and, moving as fast as the lyrics do, were unreadable at times. Just accept that few people know the lyrics to the song so we can see the video.

Amo

It's one of my guilty pleasure with all AMV Hell: trying to understand what I didn't understand, and discovering a lot of things in the process.

Regarding the previous discussion of humor and having to look through a series to get a joke, isn't relying on a concept that would only be funny to people that watch a bunch of anime sort of defeat the purpose? If a comedian has to have a joke explained, isn't he generally considered to have failed, due to the joke going over the head of most of the audience, potentially taking a few days for them to find it funny, if at all?

I'm of 2 minds (no, not Bipolar) on the "inside joke" premise. Mainly because I've been introduced to a LOT of good Anime by going through AMVHell credits and then looking up some of the jokes I didn't get the first time.

Of course, they can also turn out to just not be funny, but then a lot of comedians aren't that funny. Personally, I never understood why Chris Farley even had a career. Not everyone is gonna like every joke.
