AMV Hell 7
AMV Hell 7 is scheduled to premiere at the following conventions:
Otakon (Baltimore, MD) - August 8th and 9th at 11:30pm
Animethon (Edmonton, AB, Canada) - August 9th at 7:00pm
Anime Weekend Atlanta (Atlanta, GA) - September 27 at 10:30pm
Anime USA (Washington, DC) - October 4th 1:00am (Friday night) and October 5th at Midnight (Saturday night)

Online release - Saturday, October 4, evening around 6-8pm EST

In commemoration of the 10 year anniversary of AMV Hell, we will be producing a new entry in the series, AMV Hell 7.
As everyone knows, AMV Hell is a work created by the community. We need YOUR funny videos in order to make this a success!
And unfortunately not every video that is submitted can be accepted. From past experience, around 1/4 - 1/3 of the total entries may be accepted.
So, please follow the guidelines below to submit your video and make sure that you have the best chance of getting accepted!

General Guidelines
First of all, what makes an AMV Hell video? Your video should contain anime, and it should be mixed with an excerpt from a song or some other type of audio.
Next, your video should be FUNNY. Laugh out loud funny. The funnier it is, the better chance of getting accepted!
Then next, your video should be SHORT. We don't want full-length AMVs. Just get to the point and show only what is necessary. Videos should generally be shorter than 30 seconds.
Also, try to make your ideas as original as possible. Don't retread old concepts that have been done before in previous amv hells.
Finally, it should go without saying that the videos need to be YOUR OWN. Don't try to submit something that someone else made, and don't copy an idea that you saw elsewhere.

Content Guidelines
The AMV Hell videos are often shown at family-friendly conventions, and while it can be fun to try to be offensive or irreverent, we need to keep things within certain boundaries.
There should not be any nudity that includes nipples or genitalia. Cleavage or butts should be ok. Really sexual stuff might still be off-limits even if it doesn't show anything explicit.
Avoid really intense graphic violence.
Keep the language fairly clean. Don't use audio that has the following words unless it is censored: ****, ****, **** There are some other words that may or may not be allowed based on their usage. Try to use your best judgement.

Technical Guidelines
The project will be produced at 720p HD resolution, 23.976 fps.
Please submit an MP4 or MKV file, with the highest quality settings you can.
Keep the aspect ratio at the correct aspect ratio of your source footage.
If your source footage is standard definition, there is no need to upscale it.
Try to use the highest quality source footage available.
DO NOT submit files in MOV (quicktime) or WMV formats. These can cause issues with the software I use.

More technical stuff for people who understand it:
Its not necessary to submit videos in a lossless or uncompressed format. It just uses up my HD space and takes forever to download. An MP4 file with the video quantizer set to 15 or lower ought to be visually lossless. Please set your audio to the highest bitrate. Uncompressed or FLAC audio can be used if you use an MKV container.
Audio should be stereo, not surround.
If you really want to submit a lossless compressed file, please use either the UT video, Lagarith, or Huffyuv codecs. DO NOT send raw uncompressed video.
If you are using DVD footage, please be sure to IVTC if necessary, and resize to the correct aspect ratio.

How to actually submit a video
First, you need to register an account here on this site. This is purely so we can track your entries. You will not receive spam.
Upload your video to either Dropbox or Google Drive. These are the only 2 approved upload sites.
If you upload to google drive, make sure to actually set the permission so the file can be viewed.
Do not post on youtube or other streaming sites.
Fill out the entry form here, for each video that you submit: (REMOVED)
If you need to upload an alternative or fixed version of an entry, please post a reply on the entry thread rather than making a new entry.
After you fill out the form, it will create a thread in a private area of the forum. We can discuss your entry via this thread. So please check the entries forum (http://www.amvhell.com/forumdisplay.php?16-AMV-Hell-7-Entries) from time to time to see if we have said anything about your video. I recommend subscribing to that part of the forum so you will be notified if we reply to one of your threads.
If for some reason you are unable to register on this site or follow the recommended submission process, we may provide an alternative method via email. More will be mentioned about this later.

I think the whole point of the "maybe" section is for the clips that have a great joke but bad editing behind it. The "maybe" gives the editor a chance to improve the quality.

at this point someone needs to send jinzo amv tools, give torrent links to the videos he uses [HD!] and then via stream vissualy show on which setting to render/convert or edit specific things [yes its basicaly spoonfeedig, but after my expierience with jinzo i dont see any other options] while holding direct conversation.
if someone has already done that, well... yeah....

Not happy, they all feel TOO long, but Vegas can't seem to handle the files after they've been encoded and I deleted the uncompressed AVI files months ago. Looks like I'll be redoing the whole lot just to cut off about 10 seconds on each -_-

You could try a tool like YAMB or something to see if you can cut out the parts you dont want. It probably can only cut on keyframes though.

Thanks Zarx, actually I just found "My MP4box GUI" can remux the files in seconds and for some reason Vegas can now read the files perfectly.

There doesn't appear to be any visual difference, but I'll go slow and check to make sure I'm not ruining the quality or something stupid.

*EDIT* Wonder if there's any AMV Tennis clips that are good enough to be remade properly for AMVH7.

Well Haar has been showing me these things and my video quality should improve now i have a better understanding of ripping and encoding, I just need to be better at the actual editing part:sweatdrop:

2) to many anime have real 29.97fps in OP, ED, panorama's and some another scenes with smooth camera
3) some rips have variable fps, becouse see point 2

Zarx mentioned before that there is no need for upscaling when your source is in SD. As a matter of fact upscaling SD video might actually make it look worse.

23.976 is the predominant framerate for the VAST majority of anime with the exception of a few things. Its not feasible to use variable framerate for this project and it would be dumb to use a different fps like 29.97. If you need to use footage that is a different framerate, then simply use Assumefps(23.976) in avisynth and you are done.

I don't really care about the fps in the source anime, but I like editing clips in 29.97, fast motion is better and looks more fluid.

60fps is too many keyframes to work on, but looks nice in twixtor.

Guess I will have to convert 29.97 to 23.976 and lose some keyframes.

I’ll rephrase my original sentiment in the teaser thread:
Don’t pad out the AMV Hell 7 video to feature length just for the hell of it, put only the best stuff in and keep it all killer, no filler.

Uh oh....with all this talk of fps maybe i shouldn't have been so quick to submit some things. Well, i think it doesn't matter in the long run since my encoding process hasn't drawn complaints since 6.66 at least.

Yes, the upscaling will happen by me. If you prefer to do it yourself you can.

My hodgepodge editing process usually results with this.
Any framerate is acceptable, 23.976 is preferable. Other framerates may result in dropped/duplicate frames.

30 seconds and PG-13 is a pretty short list of limitations.

When we working on a project Ru.Comix 3 we had a problem: a lot of people understood the phrase "The project will be produced at 768х432 but you can add 1280x720 too" like "YOU MUST UPSCALE TO 720p!"

personal opinion but with CRAP like that getting in to 6.66 (as represented by the picture) I don't see how anything can legitimately be Rejected from AMVHELL 7.

I know I keep going on about it,but out of every AMV I've ever seen accepted in to one of the main AMVHELLS that clips is by far the worst of all the clips.

I guess I'll put the pedal to the metal and try to submit SOMETHING at least acceptable, but I'll be lucky to come up with anything as good as even my Dumb Ways to Die clip.

Especially if the process of converting MKVs to something usable in Vegas is still as horrendously convoluted as it was the first time around.

Well there has been 130 threads started for AMV Hell Entries, Amv Hell 6.66 had around 260 clips and Zarx said 1/3 - 1/4 clips will be most likely accepted(We will go with the lower estimate). So of the clips submitted in the last 10 days around 33 will be accepted, which means we are 13% done with AMV Hell 7, if it sticks with the 1.5 hour run time. We are well on track to reach our goal.

Yes and no... I think that the people that already turned in all their backlog will slow down, looking at you Haar, but I know there are a lot of people yet to turn in any of their backlog/ working on multiple clips, myself included. There were 91 editors for AMV Hell 6.66 and I doubt we have even reached anywhere close to that number.

Worst thing like that I ever had was a streaming episode of ST: New Voyages. It was over 1 gig. I eventually got the whole thing, re-encoded it and put it on bit torrent for other slow down loaders.

Are collaborations allowed? Like say I have a sound bit that I would like to use. But I lack the editing software to do it. Can I collaborate with a fellow user to use the sound bit along with a video he finds fitting.

I recall Haar collaborating with Matt and N.P.C.C. for a couple of videos in 6.66, so the answer is yes.

Though I'm curious as to who would collaborate with you in that manner... guess it's not my business.

55 Accepted so far. (About 17 minutes).
91 Maybe.
108 rejected.

If videos keep coming in at a steady rate, this might turn out pretty well.

So I have two stupid questions:

1) Is it acceptable to submit a video with a framerate of 29.97fps, or does it need to be 23.976 since that's what the final product will be? I use adobe premiere elements 8 (which is probably my first mistake, but leaving that aside for the moment) and it CAN export at 23.976, but it creates a minor lip-syncing issue. One which I'm not sure I'd be able to fix since the actual editing timeline is at 29.97 (and doesn't seem to have an alternate setting). It's kind of a minor thing, but it's also kind of a 4-second-long video, so I'd like there to not be any visual snags if possible. Alternatively, is there an easy way to convert from 29.97 to 23.976 with avisynth without screwing everything up? I know it's something you usually do when you're working with DVD footage to get rid of interlacing, but in this case interlacing isn't the issue.

(Is that gibberish? I've been doing video editing for a while but every time I think I know what I'm talking about, I am quickly reminded that I actually don't. To wit, I have no clue why importing 23.796fps footage into Premiere Elements works in the first place, if it always acts as though it's 29.97fps)

2) On a slightly less "I have no idea what I'm doing" note, how should video submissions cut off? Do you guys need the video to go an extra second or something to do the transition, or should video and audio stop all at once?

Its always easier for me to cut some extra off from the end of your clip than the other way around.
For some reason I get a lot of entries where the last word is either cut short or missing altogether. Try to avoid cutting things mid-word.

Just a little update on which people currently have the most ACCEPTED entries so far.
There are currently 90 accepted entries in total, and then 120+ maybes.

Yes, these 4 guys account for half of the videos.

Also, that deadline's coming up! May 1!

I was toying with my 80s challenge clip being an AMV hell clip at first however I never felt proud enough to submit to 7.
However I am in the midst of making my 4th clip for AMV 7. Of which my 80s challenge clip taught me alot and prepared me for this clip. Which is coming together VERY VERY well. I am very optimistic, if so then it will be my best clip so far.
Then when I work on a few other clips and if they are accepted I will be a 5th of one half.

Which is a very sad situation. I just started editing AMV clips 18 days ago.

PS all older anime which are not used if not often used and varied audio sources that are not used in any past AMV hell. So I will be offering a very different change of pace. Just gotta hope my ideas and skills collab to make the end result good or likeable.

Pro: SSG isn't heading this up so we are getting consistent feedback and not cryptic post alluding to his descent into madness from watching the original hell 6 clips which ****ed everything up to be honest...

Pro: Zarx is seeming stricter this time around which is good. (unless he's scrutinizing my waifu! *eye twitches*)

I have no reason to doubt this will be a quality product, but if it isn't, i'll entertain myself anyway via the thread in which the project was posted.

I have to say, most of the "rejected" videos so far this time have been a lot better overall than the rejected videos from past amv hells. There haven't been a whole lot that were just completely and utterly horrible.
And I've currently got 145 accepted videos so far.

Hello! I'm...sort of new here, but the series amuses me so much that I thought I'd take a shot at an entry.

I read the rules top to bottom and made two clips to see if they're any good. A friend said there was need of a pause at the start, but I wasn't 100% sure since I saw nothing of the sort in the rules posted here. So one has a pause and the other doesn't. I can fix anything if needed, just lemme know!

I understand that it's kind of last minute, but I really liked the reruns shown at Otakon when I last went, and since a friend of mine made an attempt for 7 I thought I'd give it a shot too. ^ ^;

I guess it's impossible to get good automatic conversion from 29.97 to 23.976. I'll have to manually rebuild every clip for lower framerate. It's a pity, time remapping is the only effect I know how to use and the extra frames help a lot in fast audio sources.

Whenever Zarx gets it done. Any "official" release dates apart from that are pure bull****, except MAYBE the ones that come from Zarx.....which none have so far.

so I'm happy with that result.

Happy isn't the word, lets say I'm overly ecstatic about it.

Its probably going to premiere at otakon this year.
As for online release, still have no hard plans or date set.

This early into this big of a project, I'm surprised you even have "probably going to premeire at otakon this year" as an official (tentative) release date.

Well its far enough away that I can be reasonably sure I'll have it finished.

Fair enough. You've done this enough times that I can place a bit more trust on even the "not quite set in stone" release dates. At least you're not saying something like "TOMORROW!!!!!! HOLY SHEET, GUIZ, I'M NOT EVEN TROLLING!!!"

.....now to wait for another one of SSG's release dates.....
