Now that the cat's out of the bag, I'll let you in on a little secret: the entry you saw in challenge 17 wasn't made out of the first idea I had. I actually had another video for the challenge before I concluded it didn't stand out that much.

Said video was, indeed, my first attempt at an AMV Clip.

That was... a good fit. Nice synergy.

Being a typical Brit and favouring brevity as I do- I personally would have cut out the first 12 or 16 seconds, starting the clip either at the "I will catch you" line or more preferably the chorus itself. Perhaps then the short, bed-sheet pulling sequence (between 18-20 seconds) could have been substituted for the kiss at the start or something else a little better fitting (focusing on Keitaro and Kanako rather than Naru).

I’m mildly familiar with the story of “Love Hina” (unfortunately) so I understand Kanako’s goal in the narrative of the clip; the first 16 seconds of the clip are therefore just a bit of unnecessary exposition for me (well, the “I will catch you” bit does have a little joke attached to it, I’ll give you that).
Those first 16 seconds might help the (luckily) ignorant watcher better understand the set-up of the joke… but I think the chorus section makes it pretty obvious what the joke is anyway.

Better to keep the clip as short as possible, that way- if the viewer gets the joke= win. If they don’t = their loss, at least the clip is brief and it doesn’t overstay its welcome. That’s my philosophy.

Besides that- good quality video and audio… good timing on the cuts… there’s little to fault on this one beside the fact that flying, turtle-things aren’t butterflies :P

Nah, man, I'm not offended at all. There's a lot of stuff I don't know about editing, most of it being really basic **** like how re-sampling works.

As for the resolution thing, I screwed it up. Didn't notice the discrepancy between some of my source footage, and I am going to need to fix it before I consider submitting it anywhere. Wasn't sure how noticeable it was, but now I know, so thanks.

sync... well where it had some, it seemed fitting.
story would work only those who watched bleach. all of it.
now i figure you tried shoehorning all the fighting to fill the entire story, aside from the fact that its generic random fighting mashups, its too fast to keep track whats going on.

Well, I liked it, only problem, and this is nit picking, is that there was some resampling issues. Try to render your project in the same frame rate as the original files and that'll fix the ghosting issue.

My 2nd and 3rd made for a friend. SAO Amv's to songs from Guilty crown.

4th: Ao No Exorcist AMV Short: His World Zebra Head Yukio dedication

My latest: SAO meets HOTD. I remembered a comparison about the two characters a few months ago. About Kirito and Asuna being younger versions of some HOTD main characters.The song is set to The last one Standing (Simple plan) also thinking of doing a Nightcore version.

First thing, subtitles and watermarks, is a no. In this day and age it's easy to get "soft-subbed" (meaning subtitles aren't in the actual video) and bluray quality so there's no tv signs. Even guys like horriblesubs somehow get the shows without watermarks/station id.

Can't see much relation between video and song. When it comes to AMV's makers tend to make the video compliment the song, either telling a story following the song lyrics, or matching the pace of the video to the flow/beat of the song. The best do both. The greatest give you a great idea of what the show is about and what it's tone is like.

I went through them and they all seem the same. You can edit, so I guess the issue is better video sources and try match the song to the anime better.

its good that youre trying to be unique, but you need to know one thing. what makes amvs special is the harmony between the audio and the vissuals. the singer says hate, you show them a person stabed. the music hits a drum, you do an explosion. the comedian does a punch line you visualy recreate it to emphasize how funny it is.
only amv unbreakable seems to slightly fit, but you need to be more consistent, better timing, make it that the singer actualy sings about that goat demon.

1.has the theme dows, need better coordination between video and audio, like when a singer says punch and you show of a dude punching only do 90% of the amvs like that unless you have some other points. also i think i saw some repeated frames.
2.same as first one in theme, same sync problem. did i see a random gray from fairy tale showed there or is there an identical character in that anime?
3.so it started out decent, same sync
4.still the same

I took another look at it and cannot seem to find it... As for the others, I think I can see where I can fine tune them. About the random Grey in the second one, there was none. If you were referring to the snow scene near the beginning that was actually Hiei and I think I saw another part that could have made somebody think that and that came from one of the Yu Yu Hakusho movies. Thank you for the advice. I will hopefully be able to make these better in time.

first one good quality, sort of nice idea, decent clip except maybe over produced with the effects. Its more akin to what MEP do and those all turn out so bland.

Second clip very nice idea with good syncing. Sadly the quality of both sound and video very poor.

Eva one done ok and fits sort of. decent quality. Not very good beyond.

Persona 4 clip. Its fun but bad quality.

After those the visual quality, audio quality and ideas become bad all round.

I see...though I don't recall doing anything like that with any of those three videos. I didn't alter the speed of any of them from how I got them.

I don't recall any of my single series videos being that bad. I mean, yeah, they aren't 100% as I'd set them up to be, but 30%..that's a little low.

Ah, thank you for the guide. Though, according to it, I should pretty much give up on making videos, since I can't pull clips off DVD and am stuck with the option of getting things via gifs and my computer is an out of date piece of junk with the standard movie maker as its only editing software.
That being said, I have no intentions of doing so since my videos are for my own amusement first and foremost.
However, I do appreciate everyone's honesty and I thank you for the tips and guide.

I assume you aren't deaf or blind, right? Other than that, the only real ability you need is patience when it comes to editing. You have an internet connection and a computer, so you have all the equipment needed to obtain HD footage, high fidelity audio and a good Non-linear Editing Software. And do you mean opportunities to edit? It doesn't take long to edit an average AMV. I know there are Iron Chief AMV contests where people edit some high quality videos in a couple of hours. Most of my clips take no more than 10- 30 minutes to make.

Having an action sync up with the music. A good example of this is at the start of the Baccano! clip. "For it's one," right when they sing one is when the man should be getting hit on the head.

I know people that make better quality videos with less. Haar makes his clips on a $200 Walmart laptop. And yes, patience is what you need. Patience to read and learn about basic editing/ effects and the patience to wait for the rendering times. well i on the other hand love fighting, but law seems to be displeased with the recent ****storms.
im not an amv editor so i cant realy give any solid advice in the technical side, only thing i know is from model lip motion, one uses to sound graphs to determine mouth shape, so i guess that could be a start.

2. The open yapper.
3. The in-between (slightly open).

I still mostly use Vegas. While I acquired Premiere a few months ago, I still haven't done too much with it outside of looking at the interface. From what people tell me, though, it potentially requires the use of external programs such as Photoshop and After Effects to get things looking a certain way, as opposed to the all in one setup Vegas uses. In fact, that's probably why I haven't used it too much yet.

I made this one years ago for AMV Hell 5, but it got rejected because the joke requires you to know that Baccano takes place in New york. A small part of my has always wanted to go back and make a full length version of this vid, but every time I listen to the rest of Jay-Z's part of the song, I just just say no. If it wasn't for the amount of nonsense that he says in the song, I think that I could actually make it work.

I watched Baccano too, and like Guts, I didn’t see the humour in your video either.
The show is set in New York and song is about New York… so what? That’s not synergy by itself.
That car-hit was the feeblest I’ve ever seen, and although that may be more of a stab at the animation- it didn’t make for a good punchline. It was just awkward.

The video is 4 years old as you say, but you haven’t made any attempts to change or improve it in any way, you even say you won’t go back to revisit the idea…

For the countdown, it would have good to use a regular scene of mewtwo doing nothing (or perhaps the scene of the cords and wires coming out of his armor). By showing him unleashing his power, you alert the audience that an explosion is coming (this killing your punchline). And cutting out just a little of the time it takes for Giovani to say "you were only supposed to blow the doors off" would have also improved the overall video. If it is still being considered, and you're allowed to make changes to it, I think that those small adjustments would greatly improve it's odd of being in the final version.

Well the first AMV. Started out promising as a sort of trailer/narrative AMV, nice effects, text wasn't too distracting. And then it quickly goes random with the sudden guy getting covered in paper, Konan with a man's voice (0:43, not good to put the narrator talking to a clip of konan talking as can't help but think it is her talking). I know it's unfinished, but I would suggest switching to them as children and being taught by Jiraya otherwise it gets confusing and random without any proper backstory or explanation as to why they are fighting etc

Second AMV, feels like its the same scenes for quite some time. Kid's face, some shakes, dead guy, some shakes, kid's face again etc The tiny amount of flashback at 0:25 I felt would have been much better if it was longer and actually gave some meaning besides 'oh this man is dead, let's powerup now'. The transition between the collab parts was not well excecuted, considering the sound glitch.

For both AMVs, there were watermarks. Getting Raw or blu-ray footage or clipping them out are not that difficult to do

I open up the video, and what do I see? Bleach. That raises a yellow flag. Not a problem in and of itself, really, it's just that it's a really mainstream anime. You know, that kind of anime that hack AMV makers love to use.

Not a second in, and what else comes up? Subtitles! Get rid of them and don't ever have them back unless they actually serve a purpose for your AMV, no excuses.

Fight scene set up to 'edgy' rock music with no attempt to have any sense of sync. No, try again.

There are two courses of action:
You either go ahead and at least try to fix what I've mentioned, and other problems that other blokes are going to point out, and show us those improvements.

i feel like your lieing when you said first amv.

reason for me thinking that way is cause sync is well done regarding the audio and visuals.
now for the flaws:
tv logo on the right bottom, you can always find raw footadge if you dig deep enough[or untill haar posts his copy pasta]. and i think i saw some moonrunes
the amv lacks consistency since youre using alot of animes, some scenes do not make sense, some do only if you watched the anime, using a single anime usualy makes it easyer for the viewer to grasp the situation. like for example i have no idea what was the point of the scenes in the end past the word mesiah.
not sure if you tried to lip sync, but if you did its very bad...

Well I did Try to make a Mini before, but this is my only Full Song AMV I have made.
I kinda figured the TV logo would be a problem and Moonrunes? Never heard of them. Also yeha i figured after i posted my amv and watched it again that I over did it and added too many animes to it, So I am now going to try and only use one maybe two. After the word Messiah I just kinda flopped on what to do and attempted to make a outro/ add things so it still had something. The lip syncing I didn't really go for but when I saw that it kinda went with the song in some parts I attempted to sync it a little bit.

Seriously, it’s a dumb joke.

Wrong. Get out there and live a little longer. Not everyone is going (nor deserves, mind you) to get a chance.

Those who really value doing their hobby right are going to take whatever information they can get from what we write, apply it to their AMVs, and be proactive about raising their own standards of quality. What? Who used big words? And who was being mean? They were just pointing out what can be improved and what their opinions are of the video in general. AMV's are sort of a form of art and will be criticized like all the rest. I feel like this conversation happens in this thread way too often....
As for deleting your account, why don't you just stop coming here and not worry about it? Are you trying to make a point by deleting your account? Or you could do what others have suggested and give some "positive feedback" to the AMV's that you find are being unfairly criticized.

Trying to be unbiased here now - this is overall a "meh" effort. I get what you were trying to do and am well familiar with the themes of the anime. However, this never clicks and is awkwardly executed. Contrasting digging a hole with a drill to "reaching for the stars" is not synergy to establish. Also, the pointless lip flaps and sub par quality is jarring. It's not complete ****, but well below average in damn near all aspects. You avoided subs and watermarks so points there.

Last, you need to develop a sense of story telling within the confines of your AMV. You need to find a way to get the viewer invested and feel like the arrangement of the clips is constantly going somewhere. That was under two minutes, yet i still felt like some of that footage was filler.

i dont realy review amvs [technicaly its not even anime] i mostly point out the flaws in the video.
ive already said it was decent, theres sync, theres atmosphere, not much to say there

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I agree that there's a bit of padding in there and some scenes that are way too drawn out. I'll probably try to fix it up a bit when I get the chance. And yeah, I'd imagine it's not a song that's popular with too many people but personally I think they're amazing together. If I decide to do another project at some point I may work with a new editor, but at the moment there just isn't the time.

My First AMV rate me if it was bad or good
There seemed to be a number of unnecessary effects used through out the video.
Effects can enhance a video if used tastefully, but to much or just adding it in for the hell of it will just distract from the video and any good editing efforts that may have been there.
For example, the first half of the video was shaking up and down and the transitions weren't at all consistent(color invert, pixelation, flash, etc.).
I know you left that sub in there (in the zone) intentionally, but it didn't really add much and should have been replaced by your own stylized, better placed version of it, if you were gonna use it at all.
Have to also mention the crunchyroll watermark.

Overall, I'd say it was alright, especially considering it was your first amv.
I'd try using effects more sparingly and finding a higher quality video source for your next time around though.

For the first AMV, I thought it was okay overall. I think the thing that is lacking to me is that it is a bit on the boring side. Especially 0:06-0:20. I was waiting for a big moment, maybe its just the song choice (One OK Rock is awesome btw). I would suggest some more different scenes because many of the scenes that are shown seem to be the same. Also from 0:39-0:41 the cut doesn't look clean as you go to the guy walking.

As for the second AMV, its very slow paced. What I mean is that, although lip-syncing is good, you don't want to overuse it because its really boring. Its more boring when its a long lasting sentence. It would be really cool if you could use more scenes and make it faster. Also your transitions need to be smoother and the scenes need to have a synergy + organization.

while the theme fits, in some places you could use better timing [ or different scenes ] roughtly after 0:48 it goes into chaos and briefly returns a few times.

it also lacks focus on story telling, all there i see is mindless slaughter, though its close to being entertaining without a story.

I manipulated some scenes to make my AMV's story deviate from the anime. In the AMV, he appears in her dreams, and if she touches him, he will disappear. Consequently, when she touched him, her memories of him disappeared as well. That is why in the end, he disappears from the start, at the beginning of her memories, so it's like they had never met at all.

I no longer have that on my laptop because it crashed and I just got it back up and running and it doesn't have everything on it again. Also, it is a piece of **** that needs to be replaced which I am going to do soon anyway. As for not asking for help, I didn't even realize I had a problem until you said something. Also, I am quite stubborn and like to figure things out on my own. A very bad trait of mine...

A link, a correlation, a sync, a merge, a feeling that the two items (Audio and Visual) were meant to be.

It is hard to get a example to show it done almost perfectly, however I think this might show better. This was done well enough that not only has a skit like lip synching sections, but tells a story through the music and the mimicry of the audio's source (Top Gun movie) so not only does it tell a story with the music it feels synced with the music and visuals are combined with the music, there is sometimes some extra editing to make these things match were they never did. Yet that is the glue that makes a great seamless video.

Getting such skills and editing down is a bit task, with even more advanced skills taking the merger of not only 1 anime to a tune and telling a story but 2 animes in the one scene. While this video shows some stuff that takes some good planning the theme of telling a story as well as story telling works.....probably is ruined if you know fluent japanese.....

Full length AMV's are tough, sometimes the idea only combines well to a small section of an anime, this leads to people using multiple anime for their videos. This can work well yet it takes some good planning to execute it and make it flow.

Such as this clip I made for AMV hell 7 and was rightfully rejected. I have this clip set up perfectly for 21 seconds, I do not think I could do an entire AMV based on this anime AND original song. Despite concepts of the two are very alike.

Full length AMV's are a task that you can put in filler or butcher other anime, yet getting it tweaked just right is the skilled part. Also I am an utter sucker for lip synching and thus my examples and attempts in clip making follow that, some AMV's survive perfectly well with out lip synching.

First of all- thank you for:
Not posting a Bleach fight sequence.
Not typing a smiley anywhere in your post.
Actually having decent video quality.
The general formula of the AMV seemed to be:

1. Play (near) kissing/(near) fondling scene from one show.
2. Switch to similar scene from another show.
3. Go to 1.

The scenes didn’t always match the pace and energy of the song, particularly when the chorus hits.
I couldn’t see any editing tricks or flourishes, it looks like you just plucked out the scenes and played them from start to finish, one after the other without changing anything.
I’m sure it was a pain in the arse to collect all those different scenes from different shows, but I couldn’t see any extra effort put into this AMV beyond that.

As a collection of (near) kissing/(near) fondling scenes set to music goes - I suppose it was alright.
As an AMV goes - it was nothing special.

I’m not sure what that sound effect at 0:14 is out of sync with- it’s either the gunshot or the explosion- either way it didn’t look/sound right.
That still-frame at 0:22 lingered waaaaaay too long. It would have been nicer if the Strike Witches logo was replaced with the Swat Kats one at the end.
Besides those things… not bad.

6 – Space Jam theme over video with basketball = Neither clever nor funny.
7 – Lots of random lip-flapping. The choice of cuts were okay, but the skit went on way too long.

I downloaded the footage from youtube I wanted to test the idea for the parody challenge but it's not much of a parody when all I've done is change the audio and move a couple of scenes around.
I love the video.
But it feels like it would be really cheap to submit it.

The Still frame is to fill the video out to try and help sync up the audio with the strike witches flying over head.

I would have changed if I had decided to use this for the minis challenge.
