oh ho, now THIS is an actually tough question.


how to go from friends to something more... it's perhaps one of the hardest steps to make in a relationship, as if your timing if off, you could not only get shot down, you could lose your friend in the process if she takes it the wrong way. there are many ways to bring the subject up, but in the end, you have to choose the method that best suites the friendship you two have. thats what makes this such a hard question; it's so specific to each person, to each friendship, that i can recomend 20 ways and still not pin the kind of friendship you two have. still, i can but try. so here are some ideas... think them over, and then think of the friendship you have, and what you think will go over best.

option 1: the blunt approach. this is where you two could be doing something you both enjoy or do together often (say playing a video game, walking to school/store, watching TV, etc) and you just blurt it out as honestly as you can. "Can i tell you something? I really like hanging out with you, and well, i think i LIKE like you, and i was kinda hoping you felt the same way?"

if possible, it helps if you can touch her as you say this (hold her hand say) or look her in the eyes, so she can see you're being serious. Still, don't make a show of taking her hand, or you'll give yourself away too soon. Also, if she says no, you need to be prepared with concession "can we be friends?" speech. "i didn't think so, but i had to try my luck. i hope this won't make thigns odd between us...?"

when asking a friend out, always have a back up "in case she says no" response ready. if you are left speechless, she will think she hurt you (Which she might have) but if she sees this, she could feel guilty; and that can end a friendship right there. it's important in the "no" scenario to get yourselves back on safe friendship ground with a joke or something to smooth out any tension there mnight be.


option 2: use a mediator. this is a classic date movie approach. ask her friends what they know, and see if they can find out anything. if you are comfortable enough with them and trust the person, maybe ask them to drop a hint that you are asking about her romantically. the danger is in if the person doesn't like you as much as they say, they could sabotage your chances with her. if herm other is trying to set you two up, you could chance asking the mother directly what she thinks, admit you are nervous but want to ask her out, etc. again risky as if she doesn't like you, this can backfire badly.

option 3: the accidental date. i've never seen this one work myself, but i've heard of it. this involves getting you, her, and a friend (or some friends) to agree to go to somewhere nice place together, some place you wouldn't normally go to (concert, play, nice restaurant, in door ice rink, etc) and then have the others mysteriously have to cancel at the last second. the idea is you two go to a "date spot" without it being a date. during said date, be a little flirty. and somewhere alogn the lines, you say something like "is it just me, or does this feel like a date?" then use the momentum to actually ask her out "you know, this has beeen a lot of fun, you and me. could...could we do this more often? as an actual date?"

i don't like this approach as if you set up the scenario, you are in a way lying to her to make the conditions right. I would only go this route if you felt you could tell her the truth of hwo you set up later on, and think she could laugh over your shyness later.

option 4: the love note. simple, but not as effective. simply write her a hand written note (not email!) describing your feelings for her, how she makes you truly feel. what attracts you to her? what are her features that catch your eye the most? admit your shyness, that you're not perfect.... but you care for her, and would like a chance if she is willing. depending on how well written is, and what kind of person she is, this can work really well, or really poorly. it's a toss up.

option 5: actions speak louder than words. this is only good for a few relationships, and is not always appropriate for shy, younger girls who are not as comfortable with thier sexuality. simply make physical contact. when you go walking together, try holding her hand. when you part company, give her a hug, and sometimes, linger more than friend should. (if you can get a full hug going, rub her back as you hug; the back is a highly sensitive area that goes unnoticed too often). when you finally part ways, try to hold her gaze, looking at her lovingly. if you feel the moment is right, lean in to kiss her forhead, or if things are really going your way.... slowly (slowly!) move your face to hers, and try to kiss her. if she backs away or turns her head, back off, avert your gaze, and apologize; then make a hasty exit. if she doesn't resist... enjoy the moment! once the kiss breaks, try to make a jokingly "wow, that was...unexpected." statement to get yourselvesl aughing in that goofy way new couples do. at this point, you are cleared to tell her your feelings in words "i've always had feelings for you...but i'm not good at hiding that apparently!" and then aks her out officially.

option 6: process of elimination. this is tricky with potential to back fire (who am i kidding, evertime you ask someone out theres potential to backfire lol). this method involves you two being alone, talking about school/work/etc whereever you two normally go or hang out. you bring up other people dating like, " i can't believe Joe and Jane are dating" or "i hear Jeff Likes you" (this works better if you knwo the guy does indeed, NOT want to date her). the idea is to open the topic of dating. then you two casually talk about dating, and you rule out other women. "Betty's too bitchy, Tanya's too full of herself, and molly's only interested in school, the only girl perfect for me is you..." and then you can either let that comment stand or let yourself seem the goof and try to weasle out of it. "i mean, not that... i would... i mean... um, surprise?"

this method has the advantage of admitting your feelings, and puts the ball in her court. she has a lot more wiggle room to turn you down in this method, but if she is interested, it lets her make the first move; some girls like that, some do not. it depends on who she is.


option 7: the overly corny way. this is just as it sounds: corny. you two can be doing anything really (though anything possibly sensual is better) and you aks her out in some terrible accent of your choice. "Yon lady, might i perchance to ask thee to the royal ball, as my formal escort, my lady, my date?" while you dont' need to be medievel or even that bad, the idea is to make it as humoress as possible. she might play along, or she might now, but it can serve as an ice breaker.

option 8: the formal dance/event. the subject of many a movie, this requires there BE a dance, or some other formal event (say, a family members wedding, graduation party, school dance, etc) and you ask her to be your date for the event. depending on she takes it, you can turn it into a formal request to gout there and then, or you can wait until the event. you two will spend a bit of time with each other, dancing and what not, and let natural chemistry rise. when the moments right, let her know you feel. "i'm glad i'm here with you...there's no other girl i'd want to be with." depending on mood and setting, you can lead into your first kiss as well.

option 9: the crowd pleaser. while most options work best when you two have some privacy, this model works on the exact opposite. say you, her, and a small group of friends go out to an anime showing, a convention, out for pizza, movies etc. try to sit/stay next to the girl you are interested in, and make sure to engage her in conversation when you can. then when at the restuarant or walking back to the car, with people still in ear shot, clear your throat to get attention. then when all eyes go to you, ask her out. She'll be flustered and embaressed possibly, but will likely give a yes so as not to cause a scene. You're using peer pressure in a way, so it helps if the friends going along with you know in advance you plan to ask her out. Still, this can backfire as she might later resent you for this tactic if she doesnt' really like you. It helps get you the first date, but you need to be extra smooth to win the second one on your own.

option 10: reverse crowd pleaser. this is where you get a group of friends together for a movie, pizza, a birthday party, etc and are all hanging out. Make sure you sit next to the girl you like, engage her in conversation, etc. At some point (say after the meal is done but before the dessert/bill comes, or during the credits of the movie, etc) ask her to follow you, go with you, take a walk with you, anything you think she will say yes too. When you two are alone, she will likely ask a "whats going on?" type question. This is hwere you have to be smooth. "the movie's boring, and i'm far more interested in you." or "i didnt' come out here for pizza...i wanted to be with you." lay it on thick, let her know she means the world to you, and ask her out. if she says yes, see if she will let you hold her hand as you walk back towards your friends; likely someone will catch the difference, and point it out. the timing is tricky tring to seperate her from the crowd, but it can pay off.



And that my friend, are my 10 ideas. hopefully something will stand out to you. my favorite option is the be blunt option number 1. but to each thier own.

in this case, it's not so much he doesn't like you. being at a mild disagreement is fine; having him so opposed to you that he demands you two break up is bad.

Unfortuantly, there is little you can do here. You have a few options mind you, but none of them good.

Option a: try to talk it out with her dad. Gee, nothing wrong with THAT, right? depending on the dad, having you two talk openly about why he doesn't like you coudl help him get over his prejudice. of course, it csn backfire many ways: he may still not like you, and your girlfriend may see it as an old fashioend way of you asking permission of her father (and not her) which can upset a lot of neo-feminists.

option 2: have your gilfriend talk to her mother for help. Likely the least confronatational of your options, but it depends on your girlfriend and her mom being open to talk, and her mother having spine to stick up for her daugher agaisnt her husband. a sympathetic aunt can help in a pinch, but the mom is the best bet if she is willing to play mediator.

option 3: keep it on the down low. not really recomended from the adult point of view... but you can continue seeing her without his permisision, and try to keep it secret so she doesn't get in trouble. while good in movies, this usually ends with her getting caught, and forced to choose. and she very well can't choose you if you two are not prepared to get jobs, an apartment together, and what not; her parents will know this.


The pattern you might notice is that the ball is in your girlfriends court; as much as it sucks to hear, this is her problem to deal with, not yours. She needs to stand up to her father (hopefully with her mother's help) and earn her independence from him.

the only thing you can do yourself is try to figure out the "why" of why he doesn't like you. there may not be a specific reason, but if there is, you can attempt to address it. for example, if he doesn't like your hair, it's a small sacrifice for a haircut. if he doesn't like you having or not having a job, that can corrected. don't compromise your principles, but be willing to be flexible.

All in all, you are in one of the worst positions to be in my friend, and I feel for you.

I have never used the crowd pleaser/peer pressure method, but have had it used on ME. it's why i know it works. if she really likes you, she might let it go as you being too shy to ask in private... but if she is not all that into you, there is a good chance she can resent you for it. when used on me, i give them the one date to impress me, and if nothing happens, there is no second date. not my favorite method, but i feel i would not be doing my job (is this a job now?) if i didn't present to you all the options.

If you can't tell by how i act here, i'm pretty blunt myself lol. Especially when asking another woman out, i need to be on the blunt side, cause if she's straight she might misunderstand my intentions of asking her OUT somewhere. I try to send as many signals as i can that i am interested in someone before askign them out:

1: Eye contact
2: keep the conversation flowing! Remember, a conversation goes back and forth; don't let one person do all the talking.
3: smile
4: make her laugh! THIS IS KEY.
5: light contact; holding hands, placing an arm on her shoulder, etc.

and when the time comes to ask her out, i try to do in private. i like to lean in close, initiate a light touch, and almost whisper in a husky, "i want you" voice, or a soft, unsure/goofy voice (depending on how close I am to the person. use husky/sexy only if you KNOW she is responding to you). 9/10, i can tell by this point if she is going to say yes or no by her body languange and facial expressions. If she says yes, you are primed for the first kiss; just make sure it's not over bearing. keep it light for now, and things WILL get heavier soon :)
