The answer is both yes, and no.
In your case it's mostly 'no'; in mine it's mostly 'yes'. ;D

The OVA has defiantly moved the series up the watch queue. (I've been putting it off for quite some time.)
I laughed quite a bit throughout the OVA. There were several well executed random jokes and references. I recommend that most at least sample the OVA even if they haven't planned to watch the series. I really can't post the cameos, or the jokes in fear of ruining the experience. However, I can make a few quotes, but I'll limit it to one...

Plot Detail: The main character (red hair) is a bounty hunter. The blond haired girl is the bounty, and can manipulate molecules/physics. <- This last bit isn&#39;t really needed, but it&#39;s here.

Next time I&#39;ll consolidate everything, and then if no one gets it, we can switch people, or I&#39;ll pick something rather easy. Looks like no one has seen it or recognized it, so at this point if you haven&#39;t already, start using google/wikipedia/etc to look up some info!

(will elaborate in a bit, but want to get this posted for abyssion)

To put that in perspective, I watched Excel Saga as we bought the DVDs over a few years, mostly during convention nights. Sleep deprived, and ready for insanity we could always fall back to the hotel room and test our ability to follow Excel&#39;s next episode summaries.

Before finishing the show, I had access to the &#39;fansubs&#39;, and there were several times that I had decided to catch up to where I had left off. However, each time I realized that I hadn&#39;t gotten past the third (?) episode. Once I finally dove in, I never looked back.

I finished it several years ago, and have since re-watched it while introducing it to friends. It&#39;s best for randomly re-watching select episodes, and for torturing others with &#39;Going to far&#39; (which is another kind of horor, fit for an occasional spot on the Halloween-ge-together viewing queue). With that said - the show is awesome! ;D But, I can surely see how the weak of heart, and individuals plagued by traumatic childhood experiences involving ADHD friends, ~might~ shy away while sporting the oh so common expression.. &#39;I am not amused&#39;. And I will not fault those unfortunate beings. ^_^; Yes, I tease.

Honestly, if you look back, that&#39;s how several parts of Excel Saga can feel, but I&#39;ve learned to surprise myself each time I rewatch a random episode, and realize it wasn&#39;t quite as &#39;bleh&#39; as I had remembered, but yeah, they can be. For me, it depends on the mindset, and occasionally the company. :)

Yeah, I wouldn&#39;t give it priority over other shows that you know you are going to enjoy, but it might work as a change of pace from time to time. If you, or anyone else enjoys &#39;Excel Saga&#39;, then I might also recommend Abenobashi, as mentioned in the past...

For the rest of the series, each episode visits a different &#39;genre&#39; of popular culture. Filled to the brim with parodies and references; the anime brings each genre into focus, creates an expos? of their ?appeals?, and all while occasionally subjecting the viewers to underlying themes and opinions.
Mostly,... its just zany and hilarious entertainment. ;D

The anime is parody based thus; the episodes can be hit or miss depending on the individual (viewer?s knowledge and personal preferences).

It?s not as random/insane (http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/8297/hardcorekr8.jpg) as ?Excel Saga?, and there is a ?plot? which touches ?coming of age? (and a bit on the human condition and escapism), but that shouldn?t be the only motivation. Also beware, as the anime has a somewhat repetitive formula (http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/8417/wrongfs7.jpg), so one might need to take it in pieces over time.

I was turned away for a while (after about halfway), but revisited it and then finished watching the show. I defiantly laughed (http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/5692/indianagf3.jpg), and from time to time I re-watch select episodes with friends. That?s what you should get out of it.

Speaking of the Jaws reference... Here?s a sample:
(Reading could possibly spoil some of the fun, but it?s a decent representation)

A highrise building modeled after Die Hard, housing about a dozen or so characters, half of them naked, are tossing oxygen tanks at Jaws, who is riding towards them in a Tornado. Jaws eats about 30 something tanks, at which point everyone breaks out a machine gun and unloads, causing the building to partially blow up, sliding away like in Titanic, when the characters fall and bounce off the propellers, and... but you get the picture. It`s stupid, it`s insane, and I couldn`t stop laughing.

If you enjoy zany/parody based series then just take a look at some reviews.

(Oh, great seiyu, but the dub... Osakan&#39; => Suthern? US accent T_T )

For some, Abenobashi might make more sense then Excel Saga, and it may be a little less insane, so if you didn&#39;t enjoy Excel Saga, there&#39;s a chance you may not mind Abenobashi. If anyone hasn&#39;t watched Abenobashi, but did enjoyed Excel Saga, then I suggest you give it a chance. I had a hard time getting past the dinosaur episode of Abenobashi (probably the fanservice), but it was worth it. Again, it might be a show that some will find the most enjoyment in taking small doses from time to time.

Well, just going with whats there, it doesn't necessarily look Ghibli like to me. The foliage looks somewhat Shinkai like, but there's really not enough for me to say that's true with any certainty. I haven't seen 5cm (omg, I've been putting it off since I first downloaded the raw and the chinese super-speedsub script, and I still haven't watched it @_@), and I don't believe it's Hoshi no koe, but I can't shake the feeling that it feels somewhat familiar. (maybe it still looks like that lakeside scene in eva >_<)

So just to provide another guess, maybe it was Kumo no mukou, Yakusoku no basho? His friend with glasses had curly/short? hair, and the girl had long hair, but it's been a while since I've seen it.

When you say long, should we assume it's a movie, or a long series? Or is that too much of a hint for right now ;D I suppose genre couldn't hurt either?

PS: Somehow it feels like fruits basket, but I haven't seen Fruits basket past the first DVD, and I don't remember anyone with curly lookin' hair. And I really don't think it's furuba. If it wasn't for that video from the first season of Ani*Kuri 15 video from the first season which someone *cough* Kanjisub *cough*, thought it would be funny to replace the original song with the furuba opening (with little to no warning). >:( (It looks similar in tone to the screenshot in question, but not at all in content) But I can't trash Kanjisub too much because they've helped distribute the Capsule videos. :-\

Ah, Monster. That would be another man with curly/fluffy/wavy hair. I've marathoned a little more then half of it in one night because several of my friends had watched it as it aired, and I happened to fall behind because I couldn't join then most of the time. I still haven't finished it. I probably should. I'm actually waiting on another friend that was marathoning it with me.
