Also, we established what should be posted for series here a LONG time ago: If the series is new and/or well known, post obscure shots first (good example: that Naruto shot). If the series is old and/or obscure, post a main character in your first shot. Old is defined as 'starting before 1990'. Obscure is below 1700 ranking for viewership on ANN. If a series in in the top 500 for viewership, then you can post obscure shots, regardless of age.

If you go back and look at the archives, it used to be that each shot only stood a few guesses each. 3 or 4 series were done in a day. Though we don't want it to be that easy again, I still hope that sticking to the above guidelines will help speed it up a bit. I've posted all this before... I guess I should just post these guidelines more often.

And of course, these are just guidelines. Only check if you're not sure, otherwise it should be fine.

So I was catching up on the more recent ones, and the first thing that instinctively entered my mind was Texhnolyze, and that it might be from it. Then I kept reading posts and it was SE Lain. D: Damn.. now I feel bad that I missed something from Lain! ^_^;

Heh heh, gotta' guess something I don't remember much of. Yeah, I've got this vague feeling it might be an ARMS project, but I never ended up watching it, and I've only seen amv's for it, so I'm avoiding it for now. Also, it could be quite wrong as I'm just attempting to come up with some guesses. If it's akira or I'm off, I'll go back to somewhere around my first instinct. Though I'm not sure it was much of an instinct.

(If it's not akira, maybe one of the staff names is akira something? Back to seeing if I can justify another random attempt at an educated guess. :P)

Noein? Watched noein in a short amount of time, but most of the sculpture/heads were cg so I'm not sure if that's it. Maybe there's a chance it was the house during a flashback/hallucination thing. I also think the house is too old, and the statues look a little too nice.

Yeah, I read the first volume or two of the Gantz manga, but the anime wasn't doing it for me either, then because of that I stoped reading the manga. Wolf's Rain is reasonable, though now it doesn't appeal to me much anymore, but I was glad I watched it. Watch out for the 4 episodes of reused footage recap, the 4 'extra' episodes/ova should help make up for it for most people. Also, I don't think it's Mushishi, but I loved it, and Funimation did an excelent job selling to their audience in their design of the boxset. Fancy slip covers, box design, inserts, etc. Great quality, and was a nice surprise from them.

Both of those opinions are understandable. You could have trouble arguing that either of these shows is actually bad, but I definitely understand not liking them. For example, you could argue that NGE is bad in that it is derivative and the characters are unlikeable, but you can't deny it's impact, the power of its characterization (for most), or successful depiction of depression. I can't talk about Elfen Lied much because I haven't seen it.

yeah, i dislike NGE because of how much of a downer it all is. I think gurren laggan was what NGE should have been (maybe a little too over the top though lol). it had the serious message and undertones, but they made the characters so much more likable. as for elfen lied... i really dont get why its popular. i just thought it was a poor story with a lot of unlikeable characters and unimaginative plot twists, along with way too much fanservice... but hey thats just my opinion, and I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with it.

Seen the first few episodes of Elfen Lied, so I can defend it to this extent. I'm pretty sure most of the fanservice in that series would be better classified as fan disservice unless you're into extreme bondage or guro.

It sounds like you just really don't like the characters. Let me guess, you didn't particularly like Catcher in the Rye either? I find it really too bad that people are having trouble digesting heavily flawed characters nowadays. They make for extremely interesting stories.

I would like to suggest to you two replacements for these series which I consider better. Almost like they did the same series but with the flaws of the last in mind. First, watch (or read the manga, it's better) Higurashi. It is in my opinion an improvement on Elfen Lied.

Then read Vinland Saga. Take Shinji, smack him about until he can stand up without crying, then teach him to be a trained killer. Make him vengeful about his mother's death instead of apathetic. Have fun, but don't get in the way of his vengence. Vinland Saga is an extremely accurate rendition of the third viking invasion of England in 1006. All the characters are made out of badass and bloodlust. It's pretty freaking awesome.

as for flawed characters... Welcome to the NHK has a character who can rival shinji. yet NHK is awesome. the problem with NGE for me, was that EVERY character was unlikable. the only characters i liked were toji? and asuka. but they both got ****ed up by the end of it.

Flawed characters are great. Simon in gurren laggan is another example. Its always the most intersting to see how a flawed character will overcome their flaw, or learn to accept it. perfect characters are usually very boring as leads. my list of favourites are pretty much all shows with flawed characters.

About flawed characters. Yes. I started thinking about it, and NGE really does end up a giant dysfunction junction. In that way, I can understand people not liking it. So I again recommend Vinland Saga for your reading pleasure. Really, it's totally awesome.

don't worry about Catcher in the Rye, it sucks a lot, and it wasn't even required reading for my district, and it's not the characters (though that department can be boiled down to, teen angst, until I yell at the book to grow a pair) it's the writing isn't anything special which might have worked with a more whimsical premise but I'm not sure the author could have pulled that off well

@Abbys: Yes, I agree. I was just mentioning one of the complaints people who don't like NGE often bring up. They say it's emo just like all the other old mech anime. But it's emo in a completely different way, and really original while doing it. Also, Love Hina is derivative, but it's really good. I was just pointing out a common complaint.

Yeah, that looks a lot like the snow from Karas. I bought the first dvd of karas on sale since I figured had already been planning to watch the fansubs, but then I realised it was the 'first' dvd, so I only ended up watching the first part. It also came with a UMD for the original Ghost in the Shell Movie, but I don't own a psp! >_<

Since you mentioned it, the car does kinda remind me of Global Astrologer, but the character designs are too standard since that Studio 4C short had rather stylish and had a 'gorillaz' feel to the designs. Guyver isn't a bad guess given the second shot, but I haven't seen it, and the snow and flashy lights do seem familiar.

I kept thinking and thought of Shirow, but considering projects of his that I've not seen I'm not sure it's one of them, but maybe there's something shared or it could be just off.

The expression and arch of the top of the eyes and maybe eyelash style is rather familiar, (the expression, and setting reminded me of Orguss a little). Not Patlabor, not Bubblegum Crisis, not lodoss.

(Definitely not a few other things that I'm thinking of from around that time/style period..)

I'll be back if I can pin down why that character design or something explainable seems familiar.

I haven't seen Rune Soldier, but the setting kinda reminds me of Lodoss / slayers / those who hunt elves (none of which are the shot in question), so maybe that's it? Probably not a bad guess considering the potentially fantasyesque backdrop.

hmm, maybe its just a typical character portrayal or design style of that time period? something about it just seems suspiciously familiar to me but I couldn't put a finger on it. The vuage Orguss and Plastic Little feeling is definitely not character design. I don't think there's enough of an obvious/unique background for me to connect that to anything, though maybe it shares background, photography, or something general like studio.. or I guess as a stretch there's also animation direction/artists or key guys? *blinks* Anything past that, like inbetween animators matching up (which has happened before, and lead to a successful connection by a hunch) is probably just always by chance unless a lot of them match up (kinda like studios would).

Yeah, I don't think I'd make it elsewhere without looking up info on how the guesses might be connected. I stepped away for too long and missed Sensei no Ojikan. >_< Somehow that show just made me smile, but I couldn't ever bring myself to recommend it to anyone :P, and despite the fact that the subbers stopped subbing it part way and then there were bootlegs available, and then finally geneon picked it up and I was excited that it was going to be finished.. I never ended up watching the end, even though it's been sitting on my shelf for years now. (Also, I was too lazy to send in the request to get the dvd that had audio sync issues replaced, I believe its been too late for a while now, especially given Geneon's restructuring ^_^; )

Well, I couldn't find the post that explained how to post them, only an old post with brief talk of how to take them (http://amvhell.com/showthread.php?p=7911#post7911).

Best way in my opinion is to upload it to a free image hosting service like www.imageshack.us

Then the service usually automatically gives you the bbcode for the typical forum so you can just copy paste it in if you want. You can copy a couple of them into a post and click preview to see which one you want to use, and if they look right.

If you want to post the big image instead of a thumbnail, just copy the 'direct url' and put it in between bbcode like this (anywhere in the post where you want it).

Kinda but doesn't look like Tenjou Tenge, but I'm fairly certain its not. Given the resolution and broadcaster it's without question newer then that.

Currently no guess, maybe something will come to mind. Still, it looks like there's a decent amount of info in the picture to help with identifying for people that may be more familiar.

Well, I've got a guess or two but it required me to look up a list of anime titles I didn't know, based on observations made from the screenshot. Which would probably~ be ok to guess after it's been up longer and no one has gotten it, but it's been a while since I've been on here, and I don't know the current opinion on that is. Best to wait for more people to have a go first.

Not any of those, either. However, it does share some staff with Hanaukyo Maid Team though most of them are minor players that might not be as noticeable. As for colors, the guess is pretty close, even though it wasn't the one I had in mind... while there isn't a direct relation, there may be reason for a connection since the staff involved with such things have indeed worked together before, just not both on the project in question.

Also, note that there is only one or two maids in this this show, and only one of the characters being shown is a maid. ;)

yeah, the more I look at it, it might be a chinook with the blades just being hard to see since its spinning, (and the animators are taking it easy in between :p) Which explains the two things on the back that look like the engines on the Outlaw Star ship.. and the bit of what looks like a blade in front. But it might not be good to get too hung up on it if its not immediately obvious, and instead try for the second shot.
