Not exactly - a large part of Poland is west of Odessa, yet Poland, along with Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, was the first to openly criticise the russian invasion of Georgia. Heck, even the polish president flew to Tbilisi.
In general you&#39;re right though - the countries that had problems with Russia throughout their history never trust the Russians and tend to be the first ones to stand in opposition to Moscow. The countries west of Poland and Ukraine mainly keep their mouth shut, cause it&#39;s easier that way and is good for business. I simply can&#39;t understand that, since Russia will keep testing how far it can go and once Russia gains something, it&#39;s almost impossible to take it away (good analogy with that dog).
Fun fact: The French have never won a war in the long term, except for the french revolution. And they only won that one because the enemy was also French. ;)

They sent their forces to Southern Ossetia, which was on THEIR territory, though they did act hastily. The problem is Southern Ossetia wants to be independent and since 1991 is sort of independent and by sort of I mean that it broke away from Georgian rule, but is also not accepted as a seperate country by the international community. Legally Southern Ossetia belongs to Georgia.
Now, the conflict began because Russia had her "peacekeeping forces" in Southern Ossetia when the Georgians marched in, so they retaliated. The problem is the scale of the retaliation. They bombed targets near Tibilisi (including the international airport!), Georgia&#39;s capital city, and other Georgian cities, that are completely outside Southern Ossetia.

Actually, DaMetzger, (no, not **** You.) our presidents going to Tbilisi actually might have saved the city and Georgia itself. Since one of the commanders of the russian troops admitted that they had the order to take Tbilisi itself and were prepared for a siege of FIVE days. Ofcoursethey couldn&#39;t attack with leaders of five other countries residing four of which belong to nato and the EU, and while they had to wait for them to leave, the rest of international community started paying attention and Sarkozy went to Moscow so they ran out of time to act. If they had taken Tbilisi we wouldn&#39;t be sending humanitarian aid to Georgia. We&#39;d be thinking of how the **** do we get the russians out of there and we&#39;d have another Chechnya. Also, the russians are also known to act when the international society is looking elsewhere (olympics) just like they did on the 13th of January 1991 in Vilnius ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilnius_massacre ) when everyone was paying attention to the gulf war. Ironically, Lithuania got the most support from Georgia back then.

Despite this, at a recent NATO meeting in Bucharest, France and Germany opposed Georgia&#39;s request for adminship, not allowing Georgia to have higher powers as a full member of NATO, so Georgia remained autoconfirmed as the meeting ended in no consensus.

The war began by the Georgians as Vladimir Putin left his altar boy Dmitry Medvedev in charge of the country. Most of Europe responded by sucking up to the USA and calling for a ceasefire, although Russia&#39;s staunch allies like Kazakhstan backed up Russia&#39;s claims that Georgia was attacking Russian peacekeepers and that Georgia is the country that deserves to get pwned for attempting to **** with the Russian bear.

Yeah, that made ma laugh an empty laugh too. I mean how can you beleive Russia wants to give freedom to anyone? Russia has given Eastern Europe enough of their "freedom" after WWII, thank you very much.
