You can, but why would you want to? It'd be balls hard to win Nationals without some monsters for defense. And by monsters, I'm also referring to tokens, trap monsters, et cetera. And even if you make a pure direct damage deck with a god-tier draw engine, you're going to have to be pretty lucky for it to work, so it's hardly even worth the trouble. That's not even mentioning how much a burn deck like this would cost to make.

It's actually a little bit of all three. I mean, you can have a Blu-Ray and Sony Vegas 10, but if you're blind, deaf, and crippled, that hardly matters. Conversely, you can Michael Kahn-tier editor, but if you're working with a crappy VHS fansub from the 90s and using Windows Movie Maker, you're screwed. So, we're both right, then.

That's what pilots are for. As long as the pilot is necessary for the robot to function and their willpower is strong enough, they can overcome an unstable robot. This was actually touched on in Mazinkaiser.
