HD collections are pretty pointless honestly, if a game looks good its because visual artists did a great job on the aesthetics. Graphical power does contribute to this but ultimately when people talk about graphics I die a little inside, especially since most the time they mean aesthetics but really:
1. People talking so much about graphics means that a lot of money gets put into them which doesn't actually help the game look any better
2. All the money that goes into graphics could have made much bigger improvements on the game if spent elsewhere

The entire point of the HD Collections are generally to make older games compatible with 1080p while making a quick buck via nostalgia-fans. Work outside of making the image clearer is extracurricular, which is unfortunate. The MGS HD Collection and the Jak and Daxter HD Collection did have that extracurricular work put into it in contrast to some of the other lazily done Collections such as DmC or Silent Hill, which is what made them worth it (Outside of the fact that I didn't own those games anymore, and I was more than happy to reintroduce Jak and Daxter into my library).

My two cents on the topic of graphics: Video games are a machine that combine the concepts found in sports/ games, books, and movies to create the desired product; however, like a machine, if one of the "parts" does not work as well as the others, then the whole machine will suffer. Looking for only one good part of the three part machine is flawed, to an extent, but not entirely wrong. Looking only for a good story is a bit pretentious. Looking only for good graphics is shallow-minded. Looking only for good gameplay is simple-minded. However, as I said before, it's not wrong to look for those "parts" individually; however, for the best experience you have to find the "machine" with the most balanced parts for the best/ a better experience.
As long as the graphics are tolerable, then I'll be fine; however, at the same, the story and gameplay would have to carry the graphics weight (Demon's/ Dark Souls is a great example of this.)
If the story is bad, then the gameplay and art design/ visual appearance would have to do some extra work to make the experience actually worth it (Off the top of my head, God of War would be a decent example.)
If the gameplay is bad, then the art direction/ visuals and story would have to do some work to balance out the product (Fate/ Extra is a good example for this.)
For the hell of it, I'm just going to throw in a "Video Game Production Priority List" that I look at in a game: Art Design> Voice-Acting/ sound (Soundtrack included, so long as it isn't some generic trash)> Story> Gameplay> Graphics.

One last, small topic: Am I the only one who misses manuals in games? Currently, it's just a piece of paper with a DLC/ Advertisement on one side with the control scheme on the other. I miss the large books that had all sorts of info on the world that the game takes place in. Like Warcraft's short novel-sized manuals, which were entertaining as **** to read, or the flight simulator games that had this:

I see where you're coming from, but personally, I'd put gameplay before art design. I acknowledge how important art design is, but bad gameplay can really break a game for me. For example, I enjoyed Final Fantasy IV, but they combat felt uninteresting to me and made it a bit of a chore to play. If the combat system was a bit faster, I probably would've gotten done with that game in half of the time it took me.

It depends on the type of game.

I don't expect fighters, like MK or SF or whatever, to have 'OMG THAT STORY IZ TEH SEX!' - so I expect graphics and game play.

Something like 'Journey', which doesn't really have a 'deep' story, is still compelling because of how it looks and it's atmosphere.

A game like 'Heavy Rain' has pretty lame game play, but the story is pretty good and so are the graphics.

God Hand had 'average' graphics, a retarded story, recycled animations/enemies, and bad voice acting...
But it made up for it by OWNING those things and using them to compliment it's AMAZING-(best 3D beat-em-up, suck it Dynasty Warriors)-ly fun game play and touch as nails difficulty.

Sure, there's a FEW games out there that 'have it all', or close to it, like 'Okami', but those are hard to make on ANY budget.

So much just not understanding game design in this post. Here's the short version of my rebuttal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrjwaqZfjIY

And now the long. There have always been people way better at explaining this stuff than me but I'll try. I shouldn't have to honestly, I already pointed out that pumping thousands of dollars into graphical power like some studios does is a bad move, because graphical power does very little for making a game look good. Incredibly little. Now as for what you said. No only looking for story isn't pretentious a studio can make telling a good story their primary design goal, as long as it's not let down by having super bad buggy gameplay a well told interactive story can easily stand on its own (see visual novels which admittedly do skirt the line for what counts as a game and what counts as a toy). Now for the most wrong statement you've made "Only looking for gameplay makes you simple-minded." I've disagreed with a lot of statements you've made over the years but this one is just flat out wrong; whether or not you like pvp games is unimportant but for the most part they only have gameplay to stand on, they're entirely about mechanics. Also excelling at them requires you to be anything but simple minded, kits can get quite complex(see Invoker from DotA) and using them optimally while making moment to moment decisions. These games might now have good graphics or a story of any kind but are really interesting to play because of good mechanics leading to deep decision making (see Go or Chess). I'm not going to rail hard against your personal list for what yo look for in a video game, but I will point out that it means you're not thinking very deeply about games. Also I have to disagree with your God of War example(assuming we're only talking about the first game) because its visual design was only ok, but it did the job of making things look like they were on an epic scale. More importantly though the story was actually great, they had entirely captured the essence of a Greek tragedy. Looking only for good graphics can make you a bit shallow, most games games that work too much on good graphics tend to make games that are all spectacle and little depth, but I should also point out that spectacle sells, a lot. Hell everyone likes to play something that's just dumb fun every now and then, even me.

I know I miss them. My favorite thing to do back in the day was to read the manuals. They often contained all sorts of info that wasn't in the game, and heck, I remember some manuals had sections to put notes, and I know I wrote tips down there. Time limits wouldn't work, you could buy 2 systems and alternate. They would also need to have some way to make sure unplug-repluging it wouldn't work.
We have dreams where some things act differently from reality, and we can wake up from those and return to normal life. Though 8 hours of sleep, does not mean 8 hours of dreaming, much less than that. We forget most of our dreams soon after waking, while we would probably want to remember our progress in the game.

DA 2 was pretty good, butthurt fanboys aside, it was a solid game, the story wasn't that bad and they improved a lot of the bad gameplay from the first. I have no defense for ME3, huge let down, terrible throughout but it's a case where I can at least blame a fair bit of what I hate about it on EA, so that's cool.

well, it's about as true as an Ender's Game movie. That is to say, the rights to make it have been bought, but whether or not it's actually being made yet is anyone's guess. Warner Bro's bought em, it seems.

lol the rights to make an Ender's Game movie have been bought multiple times I think... I doubt that movie will ever be made, and honestly I'm okay with that. I feel like it'd just be terrible. By it's nature it'd be an adult-oriented movie about genius children in space. making adult-oriented movies about kids seems difficult to do seriously, GENIUS kids even more so, and then there's the whole "in space training to fight friggin alien invaders" aspect. It would have to be treated so daggon seriously it's ridiculous. I don't know how many diretors and screenwriters and whatnot there are who can make such a serious, thought-provoking emotional story about children in a science fiction environment.

Of course, if virtual reality ever truly becomes real, the first thing that needs to happen is a creation of an Ender's Game 'Battle School' type arena. I demand my null g battles! that'd be so freaking sweet...

If you are a flight-sim fan, be sure to check out the video. Digital Combat Simulator World (DCS World) is a free, unified interface for all DCS products; you can think of DCS World as a simulation operating system. DCS modules that can plug into DCS World can include aircraft, maps, ground units, campaigns, etc. Not only can DCS World include modules developed internally by Eagle Dynamics, but it can also include those by certified third party developers. Check out the video and some screenshots.

DCS World not only includes the Graphical User Interface (GUI) that ties all DCS products together in a single installation, but it also includes the global aspects of the simulation world that pertains to all modules. This includes such items such as the Artificial Intelligence (AI), rendering system, mission editor, effects, AI units, semi-dynamic campaign system, and audio environment. When a user purchases a DCS module, the module only includes content specific to that module. Thus, it requires DCS World to run.

This is why this thread is going towards bad places, this is essentially just an advertisement. I'm starting to question if you actually work for gearbox, cause all you've done is copypasta the advertisement for the character. Going over some of your other posts, that's pretty much all you do, and the worst part of it is, they're all ****ing triple A titles, which means they have plenty of exposure already. Everyone is already talking about Borderlands 2, you know what they're not talking about? Too the Moon, Journey, I Am Alive, Lone Survivor, Anna, FTL and any number of other indie games that instead of having big budgets support themselves on ideas. Obviously those are the things I'd like to talk about, big ideas, the triple A industry has decided to relegate themselves to making fun, which is criminal, games can be so much more than just simple fun. Barring that though, can we at least not repost ads that everyone has already seen.

Not sure why they're doing this, it was a good PR move while it lasted.

you should play the original X-com games, they're pretty cheap on steam, and you won't have to dick around with DOSbox (which is a fantastic program but does requires some fiddling around, should run anything that wasn't on windows 3.1 easily though)

It's a game made by Koei. Think of it as a cross between a JRPG and a simulation game built around sailing and trading during the Age of Exploration. You can play as an adventurer, merchant, or a pirate. Each one involves a distinctly dissimilar playing style, but you can mix and match if you need to.

New PC came in today, gonna build it in a minute, but I wanted to ask a question:

What are some GOOD mods of Skyrim?

Things that maybe fix a few bugs, or clean up some of the game...even add a few skills or whatever to make the PC version shine over the console counterparts.

It doesn't have to be, OMG LOOK LIGHTSABERS IN SKYRIM type of ****, just stuff that ADDS to the game.

Congratulations for coming back to the winning side. I saw you posted about this the other day, but forgot to say anything. Sorry about that.

As for Skyrim mods, I really don't know. Seeing as how none of the parties I think are relevant to this subject are online right now, your best bet is probably just look at user reactions on The Nexus. Of course, I'm assuming most of that userbase is retarded, just like the users of most sites in existence, so that's probably a shot in the dark.

How the **** did I miss this release?

Eh, it was alright. ZoE 2 was were most of the effort was applied in the HD-ifiying process, and rightfully so. ZoE 2 looks really good; however, the animated cutscenes were all upscaled. There were some framerate issues, too, though not really noticeable in I; however, it is quite prevalent in 2's non-animated cutscenes. From what I've heard, the frame rates were a massive issue for the PS3 users, though it was still an issue on the 360 version. It also came with a demo of Metal Gear Rising: Revengance, which I enjoyed as a little throw back to the first ZoE which came with a demo for Metal Gear Solid 2. a

Going to diverge a bit of the path of ZoE HD to Revengance. I was glad that we got a demo for it, as it cleared up a lot of the issues that I initially had when it was announced. The game, though a hack-n-slash, doesn't seem to go into God of War or Darksiders territory of hack-n'-slash. The most enemies I saw on screen at once was five, with an average of 3 enemies at once through out the demo. The game's stealth function could have been handled better. The game is a hack-n'-slash, and controls as such. MGS usually does not play as a hack-n'-slash, and thus, the stealth aspect is a bit wonky. The animations are smooth and reflect a lot of the wild antics he performed in MGS 4. I can't really tell you so much about the story, but it seems like it is going to be underwhelming and pretentious in that aspect. I should mention that the slice-n'-dice-ing is really entertaining - even if you are cutting columns or trees. Hell, I spent a good while in the first part of the demo making sure that everything that was sliceable was sliced.

These titles are Uncharted Golden Abyss , Gravity Rush, Jet Set Radio HD, WipEout 2048, Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, and PSP classic Final Fantasy Tactics. No details were given about any discounts.

Europe will be getting four games that include Gravity Rush, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Chronovoltm, and Tales from Space. In addition they will be getting a 20% on several other games.

Looks like the WiiU is finally out, and we now have some concrete information, turns out Nintendo was lying about the WiiU's power, at best it's on par with the PS3.

Its possible some components got surged or just DOA. It happens, i have to deal with crap like this on a daily basis. If you still cant get it right take the entire PC to a Technician so he can test each component individually. Probably going to start a flame war, but I'm trying to choose between a PS3 or X360 for Xmas. Leaning towards the PS3 for the BluRay, free online and a happy past history with Sony. (PS1, PS2) Have heard that 360 games are usually more stable??

Do all of my online gaming on PC these days anyway, fewer 12 year olds who just learned a new insult spamming the talk channel.

Haar

In my opinion, you're better off with a PS3, due to its exclusives. Now, I'm not saying that the Xbox 360 is without worthwhile exclusives, but a lot of its games are ported to PC anyway. I guess it's all really a matter of preference when you get right down to it, but you'll have access to more types of games on a PlayStation 3.

Xbox games do tend to be more stable, but in my personal experience, the PS3 doesn't screw up that badly in the first place, other than some glaring frame rate issues in a few games. In fact, the only times I ever had mine crash on me occurred when I was playing Fallout 3 or Skyrim, games I should've been playing on PC anyway. Since you said that you do most of your online gaming on PC , the Xbox 360's internet costing is probably largely irrelevant. On that topic, the PS3's servers are kind of... iffy at times, though the issues really just involve the speed of matches starting. Not to mention I was using DSL.

By the way, I don't own an Xbox 360, but I've used ones owned by my friends enough to get a fair amount of experience with it. At least enough to not seem 100% biased. Regardless of that, my experiences with the console are roughly half a year old, so I'm probably talking out of my ass.

Neomalysys
12-15-2012, 06:50 AM
I only have a 360 though I will be getting a PS3 for The Last of Us and a couple other exclusives. If you want blu-ray go for the PS3 since you have a pc stuff like netflix isn't a problem if you use the pc for it but if you want to run it from a console you will have to pay for Xbox live gold for the 360.

I'm guessing you don't have enough money to buy both of them right?

Cuz I strongly suggest you buy both of them eventually. Now as Haar mentioned earlier multiplats have been found to be better on the 360 because the hardware of the 360 is better suited for multiplats however the PS3 has Blu-Ray(not a dealbreaker gameswise because the picture quality is virtually identical to the 360 but if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and haven't got a blu-ray player than that would be a dealbreaker)

Now as for exclusives that could go both ways. imo the 360 and the PS3 have excellent exclusives and it is just what games you would like to play.
The 360's got Halo, Gears of War, Dead or Alive(4 and xtreme 2), Forza Motorsport, Project Gotham Racing, Kinect and several noteworthy XBLA titles.

The PS3's got Uncharted, Killzone, Gran Turismo, Tekken(some games), Metal Gear Solid 4, Playstation Move and several Playstation store games that are brilliant and of course several classics remade in HD(Ico and SotC and ZoE 1 and 2)

I just have to mention tho: The backward compatibility of the 360 with xbox originals is limited at best and the newer PS3 models have ZERO backward compatibility with PS2 games(for some reason PS1 games do work on the newer models of the PS3)

I say take your pick with whichever you pick first but be sure to pick the other one up as soon as you have the money for it.
