Webster poorly defines lots of things, wikipedia has some definitions, all of which we covered in game theory. Roger Callios and Cris Crawford have some good definitions but they're not precise enough. Basically the reason those are toys and not games is because they don't have a win condition.

In my opinion, the difference between a casual gamer and a hardcore gamer is how much money they are willing to invest on the game(s) as opposed to how much time they invest. Like, the people who would purchase those ****ty Turtle Beach headphones, controllers, and all the other fancy, videogame related accessories would be considered "hardcore" gamers, while people who just buy the game and play it with a standard controller and television would be "casual" gamers.

Skyrim has a win condition, however it has content beyond that, as a game there is a definite end to the story with a clear goal. MMO's are way different to classify though, since there are some that most certainly have a win condition, of course like skyrim anything you do after the win condition isn't a game anymore it's a toy. For the record, there's nothing wrong with being a toy, the sims games are toys and they're both lots of fun and wildly successful.

Wittgenstein's account of it is that there is not an essential criterion to determine what is and is not a game, but a loosely associated family of criteria. If the sims had an in-game timer where your family got erased and all your characters "died from old age" after a certain amount of play time, would that make it a game?
If you're speedrunning a game I would say you are playing hardcore, but you never actually finish; you can almost always re-run it faster. In fact most people speedrun due to not being satisfied with the game's preset win condition.

Just finished Ratchet and clank all 4 one, all I have to say is

**** THIS GAME! This game is complete ****. Don't bother trying to go trough alone, the Allie's AI is almost non-existent often just running into walls and some times just standing in one spot. To make it worse the camera will constantly be stuck in a positing where both you and the AI are one screen, so if the AI decides it doesn't want to move you can't go further until you sucked that dumb-ass into the vacuum and shot it off a cliff. The game's ridiculously linear. The only though that goes into the puzzles is how to make the ****ing AI actually corporate with you.

Leveling up character, almost completely gone, and has no noticeable effect, and powering up weapons the more you use them, completely gone, instead you just by them, and every weapon only has three upgrades. You can also forget the satisfaction of seeing your weapons get bigger as you power them up to. Customizing your weapons. also ****ing gone.

The writing is Ok, though and actual combat was enjoyable when the ****ing AI wasn't distracted by the intricate workings of a wall.

True, very true I play it for fun, its just the made up discriminatory factor that people make ruins it. I personally I don't care what people classify me at what type of gamer I am. I mean the next person will probably say hey if your a true gamer you should love and play this, lets say Halo, I played it but honestly I don't really don't give a crap about the series. Yes that person will probably say offensive things and pull that gamer labeling card, but the funny part is why should I care about such false status its not going to help me get better job and make my life any better. I could say the same for last year, Dark Souls was it; some dude said it's a awesome hard play it. Gust has recently announced Surge Concerto: Ciel nosurge for the Vita. Not much is known about the game yet, but reports say it won't be a RPG, unlike Gust's other games, it has the same director as the Ar Tonelico series, and there will be a lot of social aspects of the game. more details should surface some time next week.

New information on Ar Tonelico's spiritual successor, Ciel no Surge. The game will feature a 24 hour clock system similar to Animal Crossing. The game will also require you to dive into Ion's mind in order to fix her memories. When she's not hooked up to the machine, the player can interact with Ion in her daily life.

The actual story involves a solar system with a swelling sun threatening to destroy La Ciel. Two factions have formed each offering there own solution, The Astronomers who want to teleport every one to a new planet, an The Terrestrials who want to use Song Magic to save there solar system. With the public's opinion equally decided between these two factions the decision one which plan to go with rest with the president, Ion

Not half a second after getting up they pull a critical edge out of their asses, and destroy you before you even have a chance to get up in some cases as it takes too damn long for your character to react in getting up. Legendary Souls seem to be for the l33t fighting game players only, which sucks because of the utter lack of other offline content in SCV. (Legendary Souls wouldn't be so bad if it was accompanied by other modes, like Tower of Lost Souls, a BETTER arcade and story.)

Just finished Resident Evil: Revelations and been playing Raid Mode mostly, I've got to say the gameplay felt dumbdown abit, I miss the upgrading the guns and selling treasures you find in RE4-5. The custom parts are ok but I prefer the above more, plus I miss the item drops theres nothing more satisfying than taking down horrific monsters and recieving goodies from them. Other than that still a good game, so how is Tales of Grace, planning to get that next.

Hmm... I noticed that not just with Mario Kart 7 but several other new games as well. The only thing I could possibly conclude is probably a budget cut of some form. Its not a complete answer, but from what I've seen and noticed in articles. I mean don't get me wrong VG publishing and development companies do make dough but it looks like nowadays they don't seem to have that much as they did before despite DLC sales. Yeah I guess the less dough you have it will be more difficult to add more content.

i'm not sure what G.U is but i wouldn't say the combat system in xenoblade or CC:FF7 is anything like that found in KH both games have a slower paced and theres no jumping.

Make Missingno an official Pokemon, seriously, I want Pokemon C'thulhu so ****ing bad. (Pokemon 666?!)

Let fans aid in Pokemon creation, seriously I'm seeing better Fakemon designs then have of the Gen4 designs. (this gallery is a good example of good fakemon: http://darksilvania.deviantart.com/gallery/742300# )

Rework the IV/EV system to where it's easier to get good Pokemon stats without hours of searching, grind or cheating, make it so anyone has a chance at a Pokemon Battle and not just the ones with the Uber Tier Pokemon or those with hacked stats.

Make more Pokemon useful, add in something to bulk of Pokemon out there to make them all appeal to players somehow instead a select couple dozen or so out of almost 600+ Pokemon, special species exclusive abilities, weaknesses, attacks and such which makes each pokemon more unique and offers the player to get more variety and use out of the entirety of the Pokemon world out there, instead of the couple dozen that get used over and over again.

Offer incentive's for "catching them all" instead of a ****ty certificate, like being able to catch the uber-legendary of the game (Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Arceus, etc.) after getting all the Pokemon you can, instead of waiting to knick it off a Wifi event or cheating.

Saints Row the Third was great; however, it wasn't as good as Saints Row 2. Saints Row the Third's activities weren't as rewarding this time around. I'd rather earn my infinite ammo via beating all of an activity's missions as opposed to earning respect, which you already did in the first place, to purchase upgrades. The vehicles seemed to be less prominent and upgrading them wasn't as rewarding in SR The Third. Steelport was a pretty bland location that lacked the massive amounts of rivaling franchises, memorable landmarks, and was just forgettable in general. The writing focused too much on comedy in my opinion. I found it funny, but that seemed to be their primary focus. SR2 had the perfect balance of comedy, action, and dialogue. I also didn't like how the gangs in SR The Third were just factions in a larger gang. Gat's death was another issue. I don't mind that he died, but it's how he died that bothered me. He had little screentime in the game and his death wasn't shown. They barely payed attention to his death.

i found this interesting in last story.
in the last story when you defeat an opponent they sometimes drop items like a random amount of money, a random weapon or armour but somtimes they drop stat increae items like the money, weapons and armour these are also random.
this means two things that each version of the main character will be different
and that a low level character can have higher stats than a high level character.
item grindding is fun.

Yeah, N64, Gamecube, and the PS2 were so much better than the consoles we have now. I mean, I love how the N64 is only compatible with N64 games and that's its only feature. I also love how the Gamecube was only able to support another game-platform after purchasing a $100 accessory. And the PS2, man, I loved how I had to buy memory cards in bulk just so I could save my games.

Remove those damn nostalgia goggles, boy. Sure, those consoles filled us with joy as children (You know, back when we were innocently ignorant and borderline retarded), but they have been rendered obsolete by the current generation of gaming that supports more features than those fossils could ever hope to support.

All of those consoles have had their fair share of glitches and issues. The difference is that they suffered from multiple, smaller issues, while modern consoles suffered from generally the same issue.

Sounds like you failed at PCs. I had a PC that lasted from XBox 1 to November 2011, it was able to run all games up to that time fine. This one I have now will last me till Playstation 5 comes out. All my PCs last about two consoles worth, on top of that its really easy to get Drivers and updates now a days with Windows 7, their all automatic in the OS. I could RELIST all the reason Consoles fail, but I'm not going to. If you don't know why by now, you are obviously too ignorant to ever know.

That works great if you can afford a $2000 gaming rig, but what about those of us who can barely afford a $400 home office computer? Sure, this computer runs the games I play on it just fine, but that's only because I mainly play older games and low-requirement free-to-play MMO's. I tried playing Battlefield 3 on it once, and while the game did run, the lag was far too severe to actually play the game properly. Meanwhile, my $300 PS3 runs it perfectly. Sure, I could save up my money a bit and get another $500-$600 computer that runs Battlefield 3, but what about next year's games? And the year after the that? and after that? and after that, even? I'd LOVE to play some of the latest games on PC, but it's a lot cheaper buying a $300 game console that'll last a few years than a $600 computer that'll last maybe 6 months :|

That's another thing, keyboard and mouse set ups are typically more complicated than controller setups. Then again lots of games nowadays allow gamepad inputs, and keyboards do offer more options when you get used to them.

With the correct drivers installed, using a controller is easy on PC. Though it sort of depends which kind you're using. If you get a made-for-PC controller, it'd probably work better than a PS3 or Xbox controller. Speaking of which, I remember tying to use a Gamecube controller on my computer. It worked but was sort of uncomfortable.

The best part of PC Gaming in my opinion: Less rabble in online multi-player.

The accessibility of consoles leads to there being way too many children and general idiots playing them. Can barely go through any sort of match in MAG without being ear raped by a ten year old or griefed by someone on my own team. I've heard that Xbox Live is actually worse, according to Encyclopedia Dramatica, at least, but I have no firsthand experience with it, so I can't say.

Also, I'm not saying that this never happens when I play a game on PC, but it sure doesn't happen as often. Seriously though, if you can afford it, go with PC.

Yeah, did it, in fairness Run and gun was never really advisable unless you were on like easy or were camping. Even then stealth has pretty much always been the answer.
